All families must have a SchoolView account. If parents/guardians already have one, it is very important that parents review and update emergency contact information in the account. Remember, this is the ONLY place where emergency contact information can be accessed by the school nurse. Note, parents/guardians will not be able to navigate their SchoolView account – including the ability to check lunch fund balances, pay for lunches, see report cards, review standardized testing scores, etc., until emergency information is updated. DON’T HAVE A SchoolView ACCOUNT YET? If parents/guardians have not opened a SchoolView account yet, they should see Caroline in the DP Greeting Center, or Diane in the Front Office to receive a copy of your personal access key. The access key will allow you to create a SchoolView account. VOTE EARLY BY ABSENTEE No reason needed – request your absentee ballot now! Step #1 - Are you registered to vote? As your school nurse, I want to provide you with the information you need to safeguard your children’s health, and pave the way for a healthy school year. I hope you find this information useful. Head Lice Facts: Have a Cough? Community head lice cases have been on the rise. An estimated 6 to 12 million infestations occur each year in the United States, most commonly among children 1 ages 3 to 11. So, I am writing to you to help you learn how to identify lice and provide information on what you can do if lice hit your home. I will no longer be allowing Cough drops to be administered at school due to their choking risk. In talking to other school nurses many of the other elementary schools also no longer allow them. If your child is coughing, here are some things you can do instead: • Warm salt water rinse. Saline nose spray. • Encourage lots of fluids. • Humidifier. • Decongestant or Mucinex. (It is important to read all labels and make sure this medication is recommended for child’s age and weight. Many cold medications have multiple medications in the preparations. Make sure you are not giving additional Tylenol if Tylenol is in the cold preparation. When measuring cold medication use the medication cup provided or specific medication spoon.) • If your child is coughing a lot then maybe it would be a good idea to keep them home. What are head lice? Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that live close to the human scalp. They feed on blood. The eggs, also called nits, are tiny, tear-drop shaped eggs that attach to the hair shaft. Nits often appear yellowish or white, and can look like dandruff but cannot be removed or brushed off. The nymph, or baby louse, is smaller and grows to adult size in one to two weeks. The adult louse is the size of a sesame seed and tan to grayishwhite. An itchy and inflamed scalp is a common symptom of lice. Although not common, persistent scratching may lead to skin irritation and even 1 infection. Who is affected by head lice? 1,1 Head lice are not related to cleanliness. In fact, head lice often infest people with good hygiene and 2 grooming habits. Infestations can occur anywhere in the community. Head lice are mostly spread by direct head-to-head contact—for example, during play time, slumber parties, sports activities, or camp. Less often, lice are spread via objects that have been in recent contact with a person with head lice, such as hats, scarves, hair ribbons, combs, brushes, stuffed animals 1,3 or bedding. When to Call the Doctor Most childhood coughs are nothing to be worried about. However, call the doctor if your child: • • • What to do if an infestation occurs? If you think your child has head lice, it’s important to talk to a healthcare provider to discuss the best treatment approach for your family. Resistance to some over-the-counter head lice treatments has been reported, but the prevalence of resistance is not 1,1 known. There are new prescription treatment options available that are safe and do not require nit combing. • • • • • • • 6 Has trouble breathing or is working hard to breathe Is breathing faster than usual Has a blue or dusky color to the lips, face, or tongue Has a high fever Makes a "whooping" sound when breathing in after coughing Is coughing up blood Has stridor (a noisy or musical sound) when breathing in Has wheezing when breathing out Is weak, cranky, or irritable is dehydrated, signs include dizziness, drowsiness, a dry or sticky mouth, sunken eyes, crying with little or no tears, or urinating less often.
