DATA MANAGER (12 month contract) CENTRE FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASE EPIDEMIOLOGY AND RESEARCH (CIDER) DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH & FAMILY MEDICINE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES CIDER is a research grouping in the School of Public Health & Family Medicine, focusing on priority infectious diseases including HIV and tuberculosis. CIDER hosts the data centre for the Collaborative Initiative for Paediatric HIV Education and Research (CIPHER) Cohort Project which combines and analyses paediatric HIV cohort data from HIV care and treatment projects across the world. This is a collaborative project with University College, London, UK and the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, US, as well as a number of paediatric HIV cohort networks globally. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time 12 month contract position of a Data Manager, in support of this work, for appointment as soon as possible. The position is based at CIDER, University of Cape Town. The purpose of this position is to set up and manage the CIPHER Collaborative Cohort Database which will merge data from >10 paediatric HIV cohort networks across the world. This will include managing all aspects of systems design, standard operating procedures, data acquisition, data quality, database maintenance and security, providing support and communicating with participating research networks regarding data preparation, transfer and data queries, and preparation of data for analysis for the CIPHER Cohort Collaboration. Responsibilities: Develop the CIPHER database in SQL including design of data quality reports. Oversee acquisition of data sets, conversion of data to CIPHER format and merging onto SQL server. Act as custodian of CIPHER Data Technical Specifications including overseeing all changes and implementation. Produce useful data quality reports and liaise with sites regarding correction of errors. Liaise and provide support for collaborating cohort networks with respect to data preparation, data transfer and addressing any queries or errors. Ensure security of the CIPHER Database, including maintaining access control, backups, access logs and software updates. Assist the project PI with overall project management. Requirements: A tertiary qualification in an appropriate field such as information systems or management, computer science, medical informatics, statistics, epidemiology or a related field – a Masters degree is preferable. At least one year of previous experience in database analysis and programming. Knowledge of SQL language is essential. Access, Visual Basic, and/or Stata or another statistical package would be assets. Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a small team. Proficiency in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience working in an international collaboration would be an advantage. Data management experience with HIV cohort data especially for collaborative projects would be an advantage. Good organisational skills, attention to detail and record keeping, ability to set priorities and to meet deadlines The annual cost of employment is between R213 748 and R406 792.
