look at live video from Internet application

5. Talk about Teaching:
 Purpose of teaching? The group committed a good amount of time to the discussion of
teaching and learning. We spent time talking about cooperative grouping in classes and
how each of us utilizes this approach, including how to incorporate peer to peer
feedback.
6. Admissions/future approaches:
 Summer/fall starts? Do we need to look at 2 separate groups of people?
 School/Community/Higher Ed? How can we work within these possibilities?
 October versus February admissions? How can we get more individuals ready to apply in
October? Brenda encouraged all of us to consider how our candidates differed from
October to February.
 Consideration of process? Jeff shared the Portland, OR group admission process., which
consisted of a day long interview process; Cindy also shared the EIU process, also a
group interview process. Brenda discussed the fact that it doesn’t need to be either/or.
Cindy also shared information from Idaho State—it was a mixed interview which
consisted of faculty interviews and group process experiences.
 Brenda shared info from the feedback form from candidates:
i. Majority of applicants (65%) did not attend information sessions
ii. Just over half were applying to more than 1 program; persons who attended the
information sessions were less likely to apply to other programs
iii. May need to do something differently to get more students to the information
sessions
iv. Jennifer and Brenda will continue to work on ideas to bring back after spring
break
7. Graduate Assistantships:
 Original assistantship by the college: 20 hours/week; LAB
 Additional assistantship from the college: FACULTY: Current student working with
faculty
 Minority assistantship from the graduate school: ethnic minority status (12 hours of this
was committed to the lab and the rest to the department; This will continue).
 Bonus assistantship from the graduate school: How might be use the remaining hours?
i. Could we apply those to program support (e.g., immersion
program/outreach/Scotland/recruitment)? Can the persons who works in the
lab be early on in the program?)
ii. Could we use that person to do some teaching of Spanish?
iii. Jennifer, Krista, Dave and Brenda will touch base
 Two students are committed to staying at the lab; we also have a current student
working with faculty who would like to continue
