Committee on University Affairs Senate of the Associated Students Minutes for May 18th, 2011 at 1:00 pm Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, Room 520 1. CALL MEETING TO ORDER Senator Moore called the meeting of the Committee on University Affairs to order at 1:26 PM, presiding Secretary Kathryn Merrill. 2. ROLL CALL Senators Ginsburg and Menbari were absent unexcused. Senator Sheehy was absent excused. All other Senators were present. Senator Menbari was tardy. A quorum was present. 3. PUBLIC COMMENT There was no public comment presented at this time. 4. MINUTES Senator Deraedt motioned to approve the minutes from April 26, 2011. Senator Hummel seconded. Minutes were approved. 5. OLD BUSINESS a. SR: 79-18 Senator Moore stated that they had decided to include a statement for the group of people that the Resolution will be given to into the “be it resolved” section of the Resolution in the Honor of President Glick. He said he was waiting to finalize the resolution before he contacted the campus operated about this. He then asked the committee if they had anything else they would like to include into the Resolution. He then asked the committee if they would feel comfortable adding a statement about President Glick into the Resolution. The committee discussed what they wanted to include in the Resolution. Senator motioned to insert on page 2 between lines 4 and 5 whereas Milton recruited National Merritt Scholars and Presidential Scholars. Senator Seconded. The motion carried. The committee discussed page 2 line 4 about the minority enrollment increased. Senator Menbari arrived at 1:37 PM. Senator motioned to insert on page 2 line 3 freshman minority enrollment instead of minority enrollment. Senator seconded. The motioned carried. The committee discussed inserting a statement about remembering President Glick. Senator motioned to insert on page 3 at the end of line 7, Dr. Glick’s memory will live on fondly within the Wolf Pack community. The committee discussed the wording of the insertion, and they decided to insert “Whereas Milt’s legacy will live on within the Wolf Pack community.” The committee voted on the insertion. The motioned carried. The committee discussed the inserting a section about creating a memorial for President Glick and the funds associated with the memorial. Senator motioned to insert on page 3 after line 4 be it further resolved, the Senate of the Associated Students endeavors to create a physical memorial for President Glick on campus. Senator Seconded. The committee discussed the insertion that was suggested. The committee voted on the insertion. The motion failed. The committee discussed the use of the word “sticky campus” with President Glick’s vision for the University in the Resolution. Senator motioned to insert on page 3 line 1 whereas Milt sought to unify higher education throughout the state of Nevada, by creating a statewide University instead of a Northern Nevada University. Senator Seconded. The committee discussed the wording of the insertion. The committee voted on the insertion. The motion carried. The committee discussed inserting a section that mentioned the fundraising done by President Glick. Senator moved to insert whereas Milton was instrumental in raising funds for the University through private donations, financial endowments from alumni, and the community. Senator Deraedt seconded. The committee discussed the wording of the insertion and decided to insert “and the community at large” to the end. The committee voted on the insertion. The motion carried. The committee discussed additions to the “be it further resolved” section of the Resolution. Senator motioned to insert be it further resolved that the Senate of the Associated Students continues efforts to encourage the Administration of the University to pursue Milt’s vision for our campus after page 3 line 4. Senator seconded. The committee voted on the insertion. The motion carried. The committee discussed the athletics piece of the Resolution. Senator motioned to insert before Milt’s general interest in students, whereas Milt oversaw the progression of Wolf Pack Athletics into a more prestigious athletic conference. Senator seconded. The committee discussed the wording of the insertion. The committee voted on the insertion, and decided to also insert competitive for describing the athletic conference. The motion carried. Senator motioned to report favorably SR 79-18 to the Senate of the Associated Students. Senator Jacobs seconded. The motion carried. b. Discuss potential methods of advocacy for the College of Education Senator said that the College of Education moved in different direction and no longer needs to go through the Senate. c. Continue to expand upon the list of goals and objectives for the semester. Senator Jacobs stated that he is working with Tim Wolf to discuss issues with the financial aid process. He stated specifically how the financial aid is distributed pertaining to winter and summer sessions. 6. NEW BUSINESS a. President Glick memorial Senator Moore stated that the committee would not have time to start drafting a Resolution to construct that in President Glick’s honor. He also stated that he still needed to discuss this with some of the officials on campus about naming the dorms after President Glick. Senator Daraedt asked if they could discuss the naming of the dorms after President Glick because this was the first time he had heard of the idea. The committee discussed finding a location on campus like President Glick liked to be named after him. b. Smoking Zones The committee discussed doing research about smoking zones and asking other universities about implementing smoking zones on campus. The committee said they would need to gather more ideas on the topic. 7. ADJOURNMENT Seeing no further business to come before the committee, Senator Moore adjourned the meeting at 2:37 PM.
