STUDENT ASSOCIATION SENATE
OF NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY
10 February 2012
CALL TO ORDER, ROLL CALL AND PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The meeting was called to order by Speaker James Zanayed at 6:06 p.m. in the Clara Sperling Skyroom of
the Holmes Student Center. Chad Harris conducted a roll call of Senators. All members were present
except; Senator Dunn, Senator Fullilove, Senator Wiggins, Senator Steele, Senator Smith, Senator
Theodore and Senator Wellington. With a quorum present, the meeting proceeded. Senator Brady led
in the Pledge of Allegiance.
MEETING AND AGENDA APPROVAL
Speaker Zanayed motions to approve last meetings minutes. Speaker Zanayed motions to move A, C, D,
E from new business to old business and to pass the items as consent agenda.
SPEAKER’S REPORT




Found a third computer for the senator’s office, more room for senators to work
Went to University Council Steering, and discussed issues with President Leflore involving
students on the university committees trying to resolve a way to choose the members serving
these committees to ensure their involvement.
Senator Philips put together a voting poll, 5% of students came out to vote, We are aiming to
improve this year. Get active with polling.
Trying to create a mayoral debate for students, March 20th is the tentative date, no legal issues
have been brought up to date.

COMMITTEE REPORT(S)
Michael Theodore, Deputy Speaker:
Start brainstorming what questions you want to ask the student body.
Jack Tinberg, Greek Life
Working on Amnesty Policy, Shawn Hannan is our point person.
EXECUTIVE BRANCH REPORT(S)
Cara Prock, Chief of Staff:
 Cut down all directors hours for budget restraints
 Still holding weekly staff meetings
 Creating videos on campus safety, one is completed, the other two should be done within the
week
 Director evaluation process is in construction.
 No IT director this semester, the directors and Ms. Prock are working on the website
themselves.
Stephan Samuels, Director of Student Affairs
 Meeting with the directors of cultural centers
 Developing programs for orientation to get students informed of the cultural centers
 Did work for Black History Month
 Planning Greek Week (Fear factor..Etc.)
Seth Peritz, Director of Mass Transit
 Working with Parking services to get more parking services (Motorcycle, Bicycles, and cars)
 Working with DeKalb and Sycamore routes, transit committees.
 Dealing with complaints of new bus routes, still less than anticipated.
 Greyhound buses are proving difficult, seeking more information
 Will present the data on money saved with budget cuts at next update

SAB 44035: A Bill to create Legislative Directors
 Bill passes without comment at 6:33pm
SAB 44036: A Bill to create Director of Community Service
 Bill passes without comment at 6:34pm

ANNOUNCEMENTS

 Grievance policy, fill out the sheet that was sent and turn it in to the Senate Office

 Internship and Job fair this week

ADJOURNMENT
Speaker Zanayed requested a motion to adjourn. Motion is made by Senator Johnson. Seconded by
Senator Theodore. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:36p.m.
