Finalization of Safety Week plans
Monday, 11/9, Alcohol Awareness: VP Belk said he is planning a cookout on the Lakeside
Lawn (3-5) and trying to contact the Sheriff’s Department to do a drunk driving simulation.
Those plans are to be finalized in the next day. Dr. Mann reminded everyone that they must put
in a Student Activity Request and a space reservation request. Both need to be approved. Dr.
Mann also advised that advertising be done when the events are approved. Approval takes a
couple of days.
Tuesday, 11/10, Sexual Assault Awareness: Senator Gunter said many professors had offered
extra credit for the events and reminded everyone to have sign-up sheets. For the clothesline
project, decorated T-shirts are due Monday, Nov. 9 and shirts can be turned in to Bowen Room
206, SGA offices or the Ag Building. CAB is sponsoring a painting activity, which is very
helpful. The SANE nurse is set to speak Bowen 100 @ 2pm and Mr. Durden is teaching the selfdefense class from 5-7 in the Nickelodeon.
Wednesday, 11/11, Bullying Awareness: 6-7:15. Senator Vagott is trying to reserve Conger 107
and will submit his activity and room request today. He is working with Josh Aaron (President
College Republicans) and a PPT presentation will be shown about the effects of bullying.
Students are going to speak out and share their experiences. Senator Vagott said he’s worried
they won’t have enough time, as many students have approached him wanting to speak out.
Should be a well-attended event.
Thursday, 11/12, Cyber Security: Senators Odom and Tait met with VP Gerhart and discussed
the event. VP Gerhart is going to do a presentation about the dangers of identity theft via social
media, phishing scams, and other ways students can protect themselves online. There will be a
drawing for a free tablet, provided courtesy of VP Gerhart.
Friday, 11/13, Fire Safety: 9am the event will begin outside Place with donuts and coffee. The
Fire Inspector will give a demonstration at 9:30 and the Forestry Department will talk to students
about outdoor fire safety at 11. Senator Springs devised a quiz students can take to win a prize (a
tablet).
Dr. Mann discussed the possibility of student seminars that SGA members might be able to
attend early spring semester. She is looking into a Student Diversity Conference and hopes the
SGA officers can do a significant program in the spring based upon what they have learned.
