Teacher Job Description
OVERVIEW:
The Algebra Plus Summer Academy is an exciting educational experience for students entering
grades 6, 7, and 8, or will be taking Algebra 1/II or Geometry in the Fall. MathPOWER, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to transform the lives of urban youth by developing
proficiency in mathematics and personal resiliency, operates the Academy. As part of its Mission,
MathPOWER provides direct math instruction in the summer to over 200 students. Innovative,
hands-on math classes are held from 8:30 AM until 12:30 PM daily. After lunch, students have
the opportunity to choose clubs that focus on a variety of topics related to STEAM.
MathPOWER, along with the Summer Academy, are housed on the campus of Northeastern

POSITION:
Classroom instruction at the Algebra Plus Summer Academy will focus on hands-on, experiential
learning opportunities being presented by enthusiastic, supportive teachers who have experience
in middle level mathematics education. Teachers will be leading whole-group, small-group, and
individual instruction to students entering 6th, 7th, 8th, Algebra I, Algebra II, or Geometry. Two or
more Teaching Assistants (current college students) will assist in the classroom, under the
direction of the Teacher. Teachers will be given a curriculum binder, sample lesson plans, and a
list of standards.
SCHEDULE:
 Training will take place the week of June 22nd from 8:00-4:00 (NOTE: this schedule will
be shifted to later in the day if the school year is extended due to snow days). Parent
Orientation will be on June 29th and staff will be expected to stay till 9pm (Start time
TBD).
o Teachers will be provided with planning time during training.
 Teachers are required to be on site from 7:30 AM until 1:00 PM, Monday-Friday, July
6th-August 7th, 2015.
 July 6th, 7th and one other day TBD teachers will be expected to stay 7:30-4:00 to grade
the pre-/post-test and update their LTP based on the pre-test results.
 One day a week: 2 hours for parent communication (scheduled by teacher)
 One day a week: staff meeting 1:00-2:00 and one day mid-Academy 1:00-3:00
REQUIREMENTS:
Teachers must be energetic, experienced teachers who hold valid state certification in
secondary/middle math education or elementary education. They must be able to pass a CORI
check.
SALARY:
Teachers will be paid $4,000.00 for the summer. Payments will be made bi-weekly.
