Safe Work Procedure Title and basic description Use bio-centrifuge centrifuge Title: Description: Separate small volumes during RNA and protein extraction Associated risk assessment title and location: RA handle human tissue 020, RA waste management 015 and RA centrifuge use 018 located in room 209B. Describe the activity or process Inspect rotor and lid for any damage before using Turn on the bio-centrifuge using the switch on the right hand side Set the temperature using the up and down keys under the temperature sign Set the speed using the up and down keys under the rpm sign Set the time using the up and down keys under clock sign Place tubes into the rotor, make sure that all tubes are balanced correctly Screw the lid onto rotor before closing the centrifuge Close the centrifuge lid Press start Open the centrifuge lid and remove the tubes when it finished Make sure the rotor is clean and no solution has been spilt on the rotor Turn off the power Wipe contaminated centrifuge and bench area with 70% alcohol List all resources required including plant, chemicals, personal protective clothing and equipment, etc Spray bottle of 70% alcohol Lab gown, safety glasses, disposable gloves, close shoes Centrifuge, sample tubes List potential hazards and risk controls including specific precautions required Damage to the rotor or lid can cause failure of centrifuge – inspect for damage before start Potential electrical hazard – do annual inspection to electrical equipment and ensure inspection tag is current Not stable centrifuge caused by not correctly balanced tubes – train all users to ensure that everyone knows how to balance the centrifuge. Make sure the tubes are balanced before start. Spills from unsecured lid – train all users in the correct way to use centrifuge and always ensure the lid closed before start Contamination from spills – Do not open the centrifuge lid until it has completely stopped spinning, wear gloves, mask and lab gown, all the tubes are closed properly before centrifuge and spills should be cleaned immediately with 70% alcohol ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________ Page 1 of 2 Safe Work Procedure Date Effective: 01/01/2007 Uncontrolled document when printed Current Version: 1.2, 15/08/2007 List emergency shutdown instructions Cetrifuge has “OFF” switch that can be used in emergency.
