Use of Bench Centrifuge (refrigerated) (SS/SOP0017)
Centrifugation is a process which separates two or more components, depending on their density - the low density material will be at the top.
Only trained personnel shall be allowed to use the centrifuge
Supervisor and/or technician are responsible for ensuring that personnel are trained to use the centrifuge
User must wear laboratory coat and gloves
Centrifuge is only used at speed <4000 rpm
Centrifuge tubes with any defects must be discarded
Tubes must be properly balanced in the rotor, using balance, and, if need be use a tube with water to balance your other tube
Never fill centrifuge tubes above the maximum recommended by the manufacturer
Only use correctly fitting tubes/buckets
Set the temperature, speed and time using the dial and select button on the centrifuge
Centrifuge lid will not open until the rotors have completely stopped
User shall check cleanliness and visible damage before using
PAT testing shall be carried out on an annual basis
Never use explosive or highly flammable chemicals
Report all spills or faults to supervisor or technical staff
