Lift festival: ‘after a war’ Venue Manager (Volunteer) th 27 - 29th june About Battersea Arts Centre: Our mission at Battersea Arts Centre is to Invent the Future of Theatre. We aim to create: A better future for everyone by putting creativity and invention at the heart of everything we do A community that explores its history and looks to its periphery for inspiration A theatre where our collective imagination is a catalyst to change the world About ‘after a war’ and the lift festival The first world war can seem hopelessly remote to the 21st-century mind. And yet, this war ushered in modernity and set the pace for the most murderous century of human history. For After a War, LIFT, Tim Etchells (Artistic Director, Forced Entertainment) and 14–18 NOW WW1 Centenary Art Commissions, have invited 25 artists and companies from across the world to think about the global impact and legacy of the first world war alongside contemporary issues of war and peace. LIFT’s programme culminates in this three-day weekender at Battersea Arts Centre, which as a former town hall, housed the trials of many of London’s conscientious objectors from 1916 onwards. As well as this, the Tiger Lillies will be performing ‘ A Dream Turns Sour’ in the Grand Hall whilst the festival takes place, transforming first world war poetry into a haunting, angry and lyrical set of songs.
