As of 2/9/16 BSYS 2583, Spreadsheet Applications for Business Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements Philosophy: This course is designed to prepare students to apply the fundamentals of worksheets, graphics, database, and macro features of electronic spreadsheets. Instructor Objectives: The instructor's teaching techniques should ensure that the students are able to: To solve spreadsheet analysis type problems To provide a working knowledge of the basic and advanced capabilities of Excel To encourage good problem-solving techniques for spreadsheet solutions To identify the basic features of the Excel worksheet screen To design a spreadsheet To link worksheets in different files To acquaint the user with the database capabilities of Excel To familiarize the user with different types of special functions available in Excel Course Teaching Requirements: The following should be followed by all instructors teaching this course (online and in the traditional setting): The following topics should be covered: Excel spreadsheet - what it is; navigating in a workbook; and text, values, formulas, and functions Developing, planning, building, and printing a worksheet Formatting data, changing font, font style and size; portrait and landscape orientations Understanding cell references, relative and absolute cell references, function syntax, and writing functions Planning, creating, modifying, previewing, and printing a chart Planning, creating, filtering a list; and creating and using pivot tables Methods and planning integration of worksheets with other windows programs; creating hyperlinks and converting a worksheet to HTML format Arranging a worksheet in sections; validating data; and automating tasks using macros Planning a multiple-sheet workbook; using templates; and consolidating data from several workbooks One- and two-variable data tables; and using scenario manager Finding solutions using trial and error, goal seek, and solving problems using solver Working with text files, databases, and queries; working with external data and queries, and web queries Assessment Responsibilities: Instructors teaching this course (online and in the traditional classroom) are expected to participate in assessment activities as required by the University.
