Minutes of Parent Forum Meeting Monday 18th November 2013 Present: Mrs Echeverry (Head Teacher) Mrs Price (Deputy Head Teacher) Senior Leadership Team Minutes taken by Alison Rogers 48 parents Mrs Echeverry thanked parents for attending the meeting and explained that it is a decision making forum. Change of school times Mrs Echeverry explained that some parents had requested a change in school times. Following the request, at the last parent forum meeting it was decided a survey be sent out to parents. 196 parents responded in total. 148 requested that times remain as they are, 48 requested a change. A vote was taken by parents and it was agreed that the existing school times remain. Breakfast Club Gareth Draper and Katy Diamond from Newport City Council gave a presentation to parents about the implementation of a breakfast club. The following points were made: The club will be fully funded by the Welsh Assembly and therefore free of charge; Clubs normally begin at 8.10am; Breakfast will consist of cereal, toast, fruit and a drink; The club will be run by Chartwells Catering; Chartwells will consult with the school on start times; It was decided by the forum that the implementation of a breakfast club go ahead. The school is to consult with parents. After School Provision Craig Thomas from Clybiau Plant Cymru informed parents of after schools provision. The following points were made: The club will be completely independent from the school; There will be a charge for the club; The club is a means tested scheme; The cost will be determined by the provider but will range from £5.50-£10.00 a day. Mr Thomas asked that parents fill in a questionnaire and return to the school. Parents agreed that the school would go ahead with discussions for after school provision. Feed back will be given at the next forum meeting. Healthy Eating Mrs Sims informed parents that in line with the schools healthy eating policy, a Newport City Council healthy eating advisor will be visiting in the Spring term to work with parents and pupils on healthy eating. A Healthy lunch box agreement will be implemented. Parents agreed to the healthy eating initiative. Condover Hall Mrs Echeverry talked about the Year 6 visit to Condover Hall in October 2013. It was explained that the visit is subsidised by the school through a grant. Pupils will be charged £95 for next year’s visit which is provisionally booked for October 2014. Mrs Echeverry offered parents a payment scheme, which will enable parents to pay in instalments throughout the year. Parents agreed for this to go ahead. Letters will be given to parents of Year 5 pupils this week. ICT Evenings The ICT club was launched 2 weeks ago. The club gives parents the opportunity to work with their child on ICT eg. Purple mash, homework. There has not been a big parent take up and Mrs Price encouraged parents to attend. PTFA Mrs Echeverry explained that the PTFA will be re-launched with the first meeting on Monday 25th November at 3.30pm in the junior Library. Parents were encouraged to attend. Parent/Teacher Consultations Mrs Echeverry explained that a parent had contacted her with regard to parent consultations. The parent felt that the consultations were rushed and not very private. On that basis it was proposed that the format of parent consultations be changed. They will now be run over 3 nights from 3.30pm to 6.00pm. Parents agreed with the new format. Letters will be sent out to parents with the date and time of their appointment. Parents were encouraged to bring their child along to the consultation. Christmas Fayre The Christmas Fayre is on Friday 6th December. Infant pupils will be able to Santa during the day of the 6th - letters will be sent out to parents. Music for Parents The drumming sessions for parents were a big success and some parents have requested that it runs again. The parent forum agreed that music sessions for parents go ahead and also proposed a parent/teacher choir. Nursery Mrs Echeverry informed parents that the nursery is proposed to start in September 2014. Parents will be informed of details in the near future. Flying start Flying Start will be moving onto the site of the youth club in September 2014. Any Other Business Mr Harvey read out a letter sent to him from a parent regarding negative comments about the school on Face Book.
