District Jumpstart Council Meeting Minutes April 25, 2014 Pendleton Elementary School, 11:30 AM Attendees: Joanne Avery, Tracy Black, Felicia Berkley, Lisa Boggs, Karsen Cheek, Sharon Cothran, Jeremy Crosby, JaQuasja Dendy, Natalie Elrod, Jack Hunt, Roxanne Johnson, Beverly Jones, Audrey Jones, M.D., Kathy Kilgore, Rus Laven, Bridget Lawrence, Kristi Martin, Markee Martin, Heidi McCaulley, Shelby Moore, Kathy Mullinax, Cate Payne, Soleil Schaffer, Colette Stewart, Jeff Terry, Debbie Teusch, Renee Wallace, Joe Whitham. Dr. Avery, (Deputy Superintendent in charge of wellness), shared an overview on the following items: All schools participated in the 2014 SC Walk to School Day held on March 5, 2014. While attendance was lower than in October’s International Walk to School Day, over 1000 students participated. Four schools (La France Elementary, Mount Lebanon Elementary, Townville Elementary, and Riverside Middle) participated in the Safe Routes to School’s Safety Assessment program during the 2013-14 school year. In addition to evaluating the access to the schools (cross walks, side walks, curbing etc.), the assessment also observed driver behaviors (smoking and cell phone use) and occupant restraints (seat belt use, booster seats, and back seat use) in the pick-up loop. In all schools, some drivers were on cell phones while the vehicle was in motion and some students were observed not wearing their seatbelt, while sitting in the back or front seat. SRTS suggest that Children under 13 should ride in the back seat and children under 4'9" and 80 pounds should ride in a booster seat. Participation in the 2014 PPIM Health & Heritage 5K Walkathon, which is a Green Zone Card event, was very low. This was largely due to the date, which was the first day of spring break. Dr. Avery suggested that ASD4 continue the partnership with the PPIM and work to find a better date that doesn’t conlfict with school holidays. All schools participated in the Alliance for Healthier Generation’s Healthy School initiative this past school year. Each school completed an internal survey of their healthy practices last August as well as developed an action plan for areas of need. At the district level, efforts are in place to increase the minutes of physical education from 50 to 90 minutes at the elementary level and 150 minutes each week throughout the year for middle school students. Additionally, five schools (La France Elementary, Pendleton Elementary, Townville Elementary, Riverside Middle, and Pendleton High) have submitted applications for the Alliance’s recognition program. Results should be received by June. Eat Smart Move More (ESMM) of Anderson selected Pendleton Elementary to pilot its CATCH program during the 2013-14 school year. For the 2014-15 school year, 8 additional schools in Anderson County were awarded this $1000 grant, two of which are La France Elementary and Townville Elementary. The district’s Shopping Healthy on a Budget Pilot Project at Pendleton Elementary School was a success. In partnership with Clemson University’s EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program), 9 adults completed the 5-week program and received certificates of completion. Plans for 2014-15 include expanding this initiative to other Anderson Four schools. The Green Zone Card initiative was a huge success during the 2013-14 school year. Council members agreed that it should continue during the 2014-15 school year. The following items were recommended for inclusion: International Walk to School Day, SC Walk to School Day, Townville’s Turkey Trot, PPIM event, fitness clubs before/after school, blood drives, personal exercise programs, and Healthy Cookouts to kick-off the card initiative featuring bike and skate safety experts. Heidi McCaulley, the district’s nursing coordinator, gave an update on the district’s nursing services. She welcomed Dr. Jones, a physician at the newly opened AnMed Health Pendleton Family Medicine center, who will be a Jumpstart council member as well as serve on the district’s School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). SHAC will formalize its membership for the 2014-15 year and will meet bi-annually to assess health practices in Anderson Four. Additionally, Nurse Heidi shared that the district was now using updated clinical guidelines and standards for nursing services. Kathy Kilgore, Director of Dining Services shared with council members the following: On July 1, 2014, the USDA's Smart Snack in Schools standards will go into effect. These standards or nutritional guidelines will apply to all food and beverages sold to students during the school day in schools' vending machines, stores, snack carts and a la carte lines, as well as, in-school fundraising. It was suggested that in lieu of selling food items as a way to raise school funds, schools should consider hosting a Jog-a-thon. Grant applications for Fuel Up to Play 60 2014-2015 are due June 4th. All schools are currently signed up as a participating school. Mrs. Kilgore encouraged council members to visit FuelUpToPlay60.com to learn more about the program and their individual school. She shared that students and schools can earn badges as they accomplish goals and log their achievements. This school year, through grant awards, Anderson Four schools have been able to purchase fit desks, balancing chairs, dance dvds, street gliders, zikes, blenders for smoothies, as well as host taste tests. Each year Anderson Four participates in a Summer Feeding Program that is open to the community. All children 18 and younger may eat breakfast and lunch for free at a participating site location. She shared with council members that she was currently looking for partners in the community and encouraged members to spread the word. Interested groups should contact Kathy Kilgore, Director of Dining Services, at KKilgore@anderson4.org or 864-403-2035 for more details. Additionally, students were asked to meet with a dietician with Chartwells to talk about breakfast and lunch ideas for 2014-15. Dr. Avery thanked council members for their service during the 2013-14 school year and encouraged their participation next year. She shared that the district will be launching a campaign next year that promotes the importance of being active. Specifically, employees will be allowed to exercise during the school day as a way to model the importance of being physically fit. The meeting adjourned at 1:00 PM.
