Read and discuss p. 3 of My World with students. Discuss with students about Anthem by Buck
Ramsey. Students will discuss what the poem has to do with Texas.
Students will write a poem and draw a picture that matches their poem. Their poem should be
something about Lemm (minor social studies grade).
ELL:
Beginning: Ask children a question about the poem or the painting on the first two pages of the
lesson. Help them make a statement as an answer. Then help them ask their own question
about the poem or the painting.
Intermediate: After reading the first page of the lesson, have them answer these sentence
frames: The poem tells about ______________. The painting shows _________. They are a part
of the ______________ of Texas.

are writing sentences.
We have been focusing on conventions and spelling but want to also balance that with content. Content
matters and we want to encourage focused narratives.
 Talk with students about taking one moment from one of their stories that may go “on and on” and
turning that into another story.
 Demonstrate this with a story about one of your students.

Introduce Present Tense Verbs-Video on Brain Pop Jr. (scavenger hunt of verbs in books, writing,
observing actions of other kids)
Kids complete Scavenger Hunt of Verbs to turn in. They will walk to the playground and observe
students doing things on the playground (around the school). They will record on a piece of
paper all the verbs.
