Gettysburg College Interfraternity Council Council Officer Position Descriptions President As President of the Interfraternity Council (IFC), you are the student leader acting on behalf of all North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) Fraternity organizations at Gettysburg College, responsible for maintaining and facilitating lines of communication between every chapter, their members, the student body, faculty members, administrators, other organizations, and the Gettysburg community. You are also responsible for ensuring that a positive image is the main projection from the Greek community to the College and the surrounding community. This is achieved by you promoting the sponsoring of and attendance at a wide variety of educational events, lectures, philanthropies, and other community service activities. You are also responsible for maintaining the unity of the entire Greek community. Not only must you be capable of relating each individual chapter to one another, you must also be able to balance the best interests of the fraternities with the best interests of Gettysburg College. In this regard, you are responsible for meeting with Joe Gurreri, the Director of Greek Life Organizations, once a week in order to create a weekly agenda, organize upcoming events, discuss any issues, resolve conflicts, and plan fraternity operations. You are then responsible for bringing this information to the Fraternity Presidents and the Inter-Fraternity Council Executive Board every at weekly Interfraternity Council meetings, which are presided by you every Monday night. Maintaining unity amongst all chapters, students, administrators, faculty, and the entire College community while further fostering a more positive Greek image are you key goals. The IFC President will also work with the Director of Greek Life and the other IFC council officer to schedule as IFC executive board meeting each week. During this meeting, the IFC board will discuss significant issues, programmatic ideas, and create an entire agenda for the full Interfraternity Council meeting. You are also responsible for working with the several members of your Executive Board to ensure the smooth operation of all areas. In particular, you must work with the Judicial Chair to successfully operate the Judicial Board, of which you will serve as a member ex-officio and Vice Chair with a voice but no vote. This student-run Judicial Board will meet when necessary to analyze DPS reports and commission appropriate sanctions if deemed necessary by majority vote. Also, as President of the Inter-Fraternity Council, you will work eight (8) hours in the Office of Student Activities & Greek Life to assist with clerical work, oversee the social event registration process, complete Inter-Fraternity work, and assist in any other duties as assigned. This will be a paid position. The IFC President will be expected to participate in all trainings and mandatory meetings for all student workers as determined by the office staff. This individual will act as an employee of Gettysburg College and is expected to act in a professional manner consistent with the values of his fraternity, the Office of Student Activities & Greek Life, and Gettysburg College. Being fired by the Office of Student Activities & Greek Life is also grounds for removal from the position of IFC President. Gettysburg College Interfraternity Council Council Officer Position Descriptions Vice President of Recruitment This position requires one to actively reach out to any male interested in joining a Fraternity. The Vice President of Recruitment must not be biased when talking about other Fraternities other than his own. The goal of this position is to educate and entice possible new members so that they feel most comfortable and well informed about their options and, ultimately, final decision. Beginning this year, the Vice President of Recruitment is a salaried position and is required to work four (4) hours in the Office of Student Activities & Greek Life. Duties will include planning, scheduling, and hosting recruitment events. Chief Justice As IFC Chief Justice, you are responsible for informing chapter Presidents in the event that a report is written about their chapter. When this occurs, you are to set up and lead a meeting with the Judicial Board, which consists of a representative from each chapter. You are then responsible for overseeing the proper operation of the Judicial Board. The Judicial process plays out as an overview of the case, witness appearances, questioning, discussion, voting of the verdict, then sanctioning of the chapter. During this process, you are responsible for directing the conversation and ensuring that each point is analyzed and discussed. During the voting process, you will have no power to vote. After the Judicial Board meeting, you are then responsible for verifying that all sanctions are upheld and served by the chapter. Vice President of Management The VP of Management is the financial officer of the Inter-Fraternity Council. He is responsible for collecting dues owed by each individual chapter and creating a budget describing how much financial support can go towards Greek philanthropies, education events, leadership programs, guest speakers, etc. He is to maintain that the IFC remains in good financial order from year to year. The VP of Management works with Clare Crone, the Administrative Aide in the Office of Student Activities and Greek Life, to ensure that proper tracking of expenses and deposits is occurring, including oversight of the IFC credit card, and reimbursement process. In addition, he is responsible for taking over presidential duties in the absence of the IFC president. Gettysburg College Interfraternity Council Council Officer Position Descriptions Service / Scholarship Chair The main functions of the Service / Scholarship chair for the IFC include both the use of resources and efforts toward chapter’s community service and philanthropy engagement as well as chapter’s involvement with academic events on campus. The Service / Scholarship chair must inform the Greek community about any educational events that occur on campus. These events can range anywhere from lectures, panel discussions or workshops with campus partners. It is especially important to keep chapters informed of this because it is a part of the end of year evaluation for continued accreditation. There is also a responsibility to help chapters in the process of community service or philanthropy events if need be. The Service/ Scholar chair should always be thinking about new or innovative ways to help foster relationships between chapters that allow them to co-sponsor events. Another role can include partnering with nonGreek organizations on campus to host philanthropy events that would be directly sponsored by the IFC. These events help bring the Greek community together with students who do not have a Greek affiliation. Secretary / Public Relations As Secretary / Public Relations Chair, you will work with the College’s Communication and Marketing to compile a recruitment handbook for prospective men looking to be in a fraternity. Meetings with Presidents and Philanthropic chairs will be necessary in order to promote certain events within the Greek community. The individual needs to be well organized and productive with social media.
