Champaign, IL: Sagamore Publishing. General Aim of the Course This course will discuss leisure and its impact on contemporary culture, diverse populations, and the lives of individuals. It also will discuss trends in contemporary American society that are related to leisure. Course Objectives Define the concepts, theories of behavior, and philosophical implications of leisure, work, play, games and recreation. Understand the impact of cultural diversity on leisure. Relate to the constraints to leisure felt by members of certain diverse populations. Analyze major characteristics and trends in contemporary American society that are related to leisure. Analyze sociological and psychological perspectives of leisure as they apply to individuals and groups. Analyze the role of leisure in total wellness, especially stress management. Describe the impact of the leisure industry on the American economy. Articulate personal values and a life plan for leisure. Describe the relationship between the natural world and people’s leisure choices. Communicate effectively with others via written, verbal, and electronic means. Student Learning Outcomes Students will be able to articulate the impact of diversity on leisure. Students will analyze sociological and psychological perspectives of leisure as they apply to individuals and groups. Students will analyze trends in contemporary American society that are related to leisure. Page |2 Course Policies Due Dates - Due dates for assignments are firm. Participation will be graded for each class unit. Units are based on the chapters in the text. NO MAKEUP WORK WILL BE GIVEN. If you are going to be unable to participate due to a scheduled University activity, it is YOUR responsibility to notify the professor PRIOR TO the day/time in order to make arrangements as deemed appropriate by the professor. Class Participation – Student are expected to attend and participate in class discussion. Students are responsible for everything covered in class. Although this is course is 8 weeks long you will still meet the requirements for a 3 credit hour course. Students should anticipate approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours per day on the course. Weekend and evening work will be allowed, so plan wisely. Exams – Students are expected to be presented for all scheduled exams. Make up exams only be made if the student contacts the instructor prior to exam of an unforeseen event or emergency. Papers - All papers and assignments will be professional in appearance; that is, they should be word processed using 12 point Times Roman font with 1 inch margins and double line spaced. All assignments that require citation of sources and references must be submitted in the proper APA format (see: http://library.semo.edu/learn/citing.shtml). Please seek help from the Center for Writing Excellence or Online Writing Lab (OWL) if you have extra challenges with writing (see: http://ustudies.semo.edu/writing or http://ustudies.semo.edu/writing/owl.asp.). Technology All written out-of-class assignments will be turned in using Drop Box. The course grade book will be maintained online for student viewing using Grade Book. All of these may be accessed through the course web site. All communication via e-mail will be sent to the student’ Southeast email account, the student is responsible for checking this account regularly for class communication. Instructor usually will respond to your email within 48 hours. Please give the instructor at least 48 hours (excluding weekends) to respond to it. Violations of academic honesty represent a serious breach of discipline and may be considered grounds for disciplinary action, including dismissal from the University.
