Tshwane University of Technology has a permanent position of (Senior Lecturer) + HOD 5 year
fixed term contract at the Arcadia Campus.
Key Performance Areas:
Senior Lecturer






Teaching and learning in Biotechnology/ Food Technology
Leading role in developing and revising the curriculum in collaboration with industry
stakeholders and aligned to the strategic vision of the Department
Participation in research group with particular emphasis on the training and supervision
of postgraduate students
Ability to attract external funding for research and to be a leader in one of the research
niche areas of the university
Liaising with industry and other stakeholders regarding excursions, research and
communication projects
Participation and administrative leadership in department, faculty and institutional
committees and activities relating to the learning programmes of the department
Head of Department











TLT leadership including the administration of study material and the evaluation of
lecturers and class visits
Administration of work integrated learning
Chairing of staff meetings, mentorship of staff and performance evaluations
Student mentorship, consultations, performance mentoring and interventions
Design and monitoring of general departmental administrative and financial systems and
administrative leadership
Time table and workload planning, including the planning of time tables and teaching
staff, lecturer halls and laboratories and teaching material
Facility management and health and safety
Quality management in teaching and learning and research activities
Leadership in research and community engagement
Involved in teaching and learning, research and community engagement according to
agreed upon critical performance areas
Networking with the industry, including Advisory Committee meetings

Recruitment, development and management of full-time and part-time staff
Management of postgraduate students
Students recruitment and selection for admission
Supervise and provide ongoing leadership for the ongoing operations of the department
Provide assistance and advice to staff members and students with respect to the
programmes and the other related academic responsibilities
Supervise special projects as may be assigned to him/her by the Executive Dean of the
Faculty
Management Of Extended/Foundation programme
Academic Qualifications:

A relevant Doctoral degree with a BSc (Hons), BSc (Agric) or a B Tech degree in
Biotechnology/ Food Science or Technology
Experience:

At least 5 years’ experience in teaching, research or industry with evidence of
publications in peer-reviewed journals and at least 3 years’ experience in management
Registration with professional body (if applicable): Registration with the South African
Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) and membership with a professional body
such as the South African Association for Food Science & Technology (SAAFoST) is
recommended.
