The British Institute of Radiology announce launch of
BIR Oncology and Radiotherapy special interest group (SIG)
The British Institute of Radiology announces the merger of two BIR special interest groups—
Radiotherapy Physics and Oncology and Radiotherapy, which will now be known as the BIR Oncology
and Radiotherapy SIG. The two SIGs recognised that their interests were increasingly converging
and the meetings they were organising overlapped.
Both SIGs agreed that this will strengthen and enhance the activities and multidisciplinary nature of
the new single group to benefit the membership as a whole.
The next event organised by the SIG is “Diagnostic radiology for advanced head and neck cancer
planning” on 2 October 2014.
The Chair of the new group will be Dr Alex Stewart, Consultant Clinical Oncologist, from Royal
Surrey County Hospital.
Dr Stewart said about the merger “The new Oncology and Radiotherapy group brings together
specialists from all disciplines in the field of cancer imaging and it’s very exciting to be
collaborating on events which will showcase the very best research and clinical work in this area
from across the UK.”

The BIR welcomes applications to serve on the management group from all members from
disciplines associated with radiotherapy and oncology.
