PRESS RELEASE
New BIR Midlands Regional Branch launches
with “Military Trauma Imaging” event
On Thursday 9 October 2014 at 5.30pm the inaugural event for the brand new Midlands regional
branch takes places at the Tally Ho Conference and Banqueting Centre, Birmingham.
The Midlands regional branch is chaired by Dr Jonathan Hopkins, consultant radiologist at University
Hospital, Birmingham. The region covers West Midlands, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire,
Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. The BIR
welcomes everyone interested in medical imaging and anyone, from any region, can attend a BIR
regional branch meeting, even if they are not a BIR member.
Dr Hopkins said “It’s very exciting to have this BIR regional group for everyone in the Midlands area.
It will provide a vital educational hub for radiologists, radiographers and physicists in the region.”
“We welcome members and non-members of the BIR to come along to this free evening event to
network with colleagues from local hospitals as well as enjoy some fascinating talks about military
trauma imaging and post-mortem imaging.”
Jacqueline Fowler, Chief Executive of the BIR, said “Our new strategy identifies the need for more
regional events so we are delighted to launch a new branch bang in the middle of England in an area
accessible from all directions.”
The BIR regional branches support members to network with peers in the world of medical imaging,
help to share local innovation and good practice. All regional events are designed and delivered by
regional members.
BIR membership is open to everyone with an interest in radiology, radiation oncology and the
underlying sciences including radiologists, radiographers, medical physicists, sonographers, nurses,
doctors, clinical and medical technologists, students and trainees.
Speakers include Lieutenant Colonel Mark Ballard from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine,
Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and Lieutenant Colonel Iain Gibb, Defence Consultant Adviser
in Radiology, Fort Blockhouse.
Future events in the Midlands will cover forensic imaging for radiologists, safe use and management
of medicines and CQC/ISAS Sstandards.
BIR members are automatically allocated to their nearest regional branch, but events are open to all
members and non-members from any region. BIR members wishing to get more involved in the
committee of the regional branch should contact Sarah Adibi sarah.adibi@bir.org.uk
