BA Development Day 2014 The IIBA® New Zealand Chapter is pleased to announce that we are accepting proposals for presentations and workshops for this year’s BA Development Day, to be held in Wellington, New Zealand on 17 November 2014. The conference theme is “Stepping Outside the BA Box – Business Analysis and Beyond”. Presentation and Workshop Proposals We are seeking presentation and workshop proposals for 60 and 90 minute presentations including time allowed for questions. Proposals should draw from the real world experiences of the New Zealand business analysis community. This is a prime opportunity for practitioners and subject matter experts to share their knowledge and experience with other professionals involved in business analysis. Important aspects to consider are what you learned as a BA and what the audience will learn. Successful proposals will receive one complimentary pass to BA Development Day 2014 with no restrictions and speakers/facilitators are encouraged to attend the entire day. Guidelines for Proposals Proposals should include: o an abstract of your presentation or workshop (500 words max); o ideally a bullet point list of the order of your presentation/workshop; o motivation for the topic, key talking points, and key take-aways for attendees; and o describe which BABOK area(s) the proposal relates to. Proposals may be submitted by an individual, or multiple individuals working together. In the case of multiple individuals, at most two (2) complimentary passes to BA Development Day 2014 will be provided. Content should focus on real world stories and lessons learned from the field, which will enrich the knowledge of attendees and help them to grow in their current role. For example: tips, tricks and traps; case studies. Presentation proposals are encouraged to include some interactive content for delegates attending their presentation. Please ensure that you have clearance from the IP owner if you are presenting a case study. Please ensure that your subject matter is relevant to the conference. Learning objectives must relate to the conference theme. Page 1 BA Development Day 2014 How to submit your proposal Use the template at the end of this document to submit your proposal. We are particularly interested in presentations and workshops that challenge our current thinking about business analysis – for example, that put the BA role in a new context or provide information of how the BA role can use tools and techniques that are not typically the domain of the BA. This could include (but is not limited to): Unpacking the role of the BA Expanding the box to Enterprise Analysis and beyond Camouflaging the BA with a different job title Utilizing other “non-BA” skills in your role as a BA Inspirational learnings from other disciplines that helped you in your BA career Future trends Another perspective on the theme is to have presentations and workshops examining skills outside requirement elicitation, documentation, and elaboration; skills that help a BA to truly deliver business analysis rather than just capture requirements. Some of these could be analytical techniques from outside the traditional BA realm. Some could be focused on organizational or people issues. Page 2 BA Development Day 2014 Why is this theme important? Sadly, the BA on a project is often pigeonholed as the person who writes requirements or sometimes as a PA for a PM. In reality, the BA is a key member of a project team who uses a variety of tools and techniques from many disciplines to help a project deliver value. But BAs can also use the same skills, tools and techniques to effect a career change and move into other non-BA roles. It is time we recognized that business analysts can step out of the box to be much more than just a project scribe. In this conference we plan to explore the frontiers, and beyond, of what it means to be a BA. Target Audience We are expecting 200 attendees at the 2014 conference, which is the maximum for the venue. The registration profile below is from the 2012 attendees.
