BA Development Day 2015 The IIBA® New Zealand Chapter is pleased to announce that we are accepting proposals for presentations and workshops for this year’s BA Development Day, to be held in Wellington, New Zealand on 16 November 2015. The conference theme is “The Art and Science of Business Analysis”. Presentation, Workshop and Lightning Talk Proposals In addition to our standard call for presentations, including time allowed for questions, we are looking to introduce a series of lightning talks (short 20 minute talks, similar to TEDx style). The objective of the Lightning talks is to get your point across in an engaging way. Speakers submitting presentations and workshops are also invited to submit proposals for lightning talks. We are seeking presentation and workshop proposals for 60 and 90 minute presentations including time allowed for questions. Proposals should draw from the real world experiences of the New Zealand business analysis community. This is a prime opportunity for practitioners and subject matter experts to share their knowledge and experience with other professionals involved in business analysis. Important aspects to consider are what you learned as a BA and what the audience will learn. Successful proposals for presentations and workshops will receive one complimentary pass to BA Development Day 2015 with no restrictions and speakers/facilitators are encouraged to attend the entire day. Successful proposals for lightning talks will receive a discounted pass to the BA Development Day 2015. Guidelines for Proposals Proposals should include: o an abstract of your presentation or workshop (500 words max); o ideally a bullet point list of the order of your presentation/workshop; o motivation for the topic, key talking points, and key take-aways for attendees; and o describe which BABOK area(s) the proposal relates to. Proposals may be submitted by an individual, or multiple individuals working together. In the case of multiple individuals, at most two (2) complimentary passes to BA Development Day 2015 will be provided. The science of analysis involves the use of scientific method; identification of a problem, gathering data, formulating a hypothesis and testing that hypothesis. As business analysts, we use well defined tools, techniques and approaches to follow the scientific method to identify business change drivers and requirements. The BABOK, reflecting current best practice, underpins the role of the BA providing the means to conduct analysis in a reproducible form that can be scrutinized and critiqued. The art of analysis – use of creative and imaginative skills and techniques (part of an analyst’s underlying competencies) to create powerful engagement with stakeholders, shared understanding of the business problem and opportunities, and to drive buy-in and commitment to business change. By recognizing that every project is different and involves unique individuals, often with strong personalities, we are able to appreciate the artistic and creative skills required to successfully navigate the pitfalls of any project. Page 2 BA Development Day 2015 Both art and science are important to all business analysts, many of us are stronger in one than the other – a balance of art and science helps us to be better business analysts. Supporting the right kind of change for the business and stakeholders we are working with. Why is this theme important? In this conference we plan to explore how we can improve our own balance between art and science to become a stronger BA. Science gives us process, techniques, templates and measurability ensuring that BAs are able to demonstrate that they have repeatable skills that are necessary to drive process improvement and gain the respect and trust of other professionals. Practicing the science of business analysis ensures that the BA develops the foundation knowledge to drive process improvement. Art allows us to add value to the team and the process beyond the science of the profession. With these skills the BA is successfully able to facilitate and act as the bridge between different members of the project team as well as the myriad of stakeholders – ensuring that the team develops a business solution that really does meet the business needs. Practicing the art of business analysis elevates the BA into a leadership role, opening up all manner of opportunities.
