Course Description

In this introductory class, students will learn how to function with simple

Chinese in everyday situations. We will emphasize the listening/speaking aspects of the language and gradually introduce reading/writing as the year progresses.

Students will first learn pronunciation and intonation using the Pinyin Phonetic system (Chinese Romanization) and later be introduced to Chinese character writing. Students will learn basic ‘one-component’ characters including character structure and stroke order in order to help them achieve character recognition (reading) and construction (writing).

Basic characters and components will be combined to form more complex multi-character words.

A number of introductory topics and vocabulary sets such as greeting words, numbers, self-introduction, body parts, family, time, daily routine, color, clothing, animals, common questions, and transportation will be covered.

Cultural aspects of the language will be embedded in class topics.

Class Goals:

*Have fun as we explore spoken and written Chinese

*Work toward Oregon’s 2 nd language standards, Proficiency stage 1 (p.8)

*Learn about culture and learn to recognize and respect cultural differences

*Maintain a cooperative and respectful learning environment

*Listen, cooperate and help one another

Class materials:

1. Easy Steps to Chinese Textbook 1.

2. Rhymes & Rhythm for learning Chinese 1

Grading:

Students’ grades will be based on a percentage of cumulative points from the following categories:

1. Daily Assignment (Basic language literacy & writing skills) 5~10 points

There will be 5~10 points given for each completed assignment that is turned in on time. Late work will be marked down one point for each day that is turned in late. Incomplete assignments will be marked down. Students with excused absence can get full points if they turn in assignments on the second day after returning to class.

Graded assignments will be returned back to students with a date stamp. It is the students’ responsibility to keep all the returned homework for test review and the final portfolio. If an assignment you completed is missing in the Synergy record, you must produce the date stamped, returned paper for full credit. If you believe you turned in an assignment on time, but do not have the date stamped paper as proof, you will have to redo the assignment for partial credit. This should be very rare.

*Any copying of answers from others, whether assignments or tests, will result in “zero” for all parties involved

.

*Any assignment that is past due for over a month will not be awarded points towards grading .

2. Weekly recordings (listening/memorization/speaking skills) 10 points each

Students should practice and record their spoken Chinese every week.

3. Pinyin spelling practice/ Calligraphy (sound combination, stroke order, character structure) 10 points each

4. Pair/Group Presentation (speaking skill) 10~30 points each.

Students work on some assignments collaboratively and present to the entire class. The whole group receives the same grade for these assignments.

5. Individual Oral (speaking skills) 10~20 points each

6. Individual project (writing skills) 10~20 points each

7. Quiz / Unit Test (Reading & writing skills)-10~70 points

A make-up test is allowed only when there is an excused absence. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange any make-up tests with the instructor. A missed make-up appointment without sufficient notice and cause will result in a zero .

8. Portfolio (Organizational skill) 50 points

At the end of the school year, students are required to put their complete collection of class work in a 3-ring binder in an organized manner.

9. End-of-the-year individual report (Power point & Oral presentation) 20 points

10. Bonus points will be announced.

Synergy : The grades on Synergy will be updated every week.
