COURSE SYLLABUS -- CHINESE 131 OLH (Fall CRN 85824) INTERMEDIATE CHINESE I Instructor: Jing Wu Office: Bldg 15-111 Phone: (650) 574-6341 E-mail: wu@smccd.edu Office Hr: See my door card Textbook: Active Chinese Course Description: A continuation of CHIN 122 Advanced Elementary Chinese II with further development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It includes level appropriate reading of authentic materials. It covers the first half of the third semester's work in Chinese as taught at a four-year university. (UC / CSU) Course Content and Student Learning Outcomes: The content topics are: selecting college courses, visiting the post office, comparing cities, shopping online, renting an apartment, appreciating pop music and culture, appreciating eating and drinking culture. Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to: Listening: Demonstrate understanding of dialogues and narratives on common social situations introduced in the textbook. Speaking: Use fluent oral communication skills in conversations with accurate pronunciation and intonation in common social situations covered in the course. Reading: Comprehend reading texts including authentic materials with idiomatic usage on personal and social matters. Use reading strategies to identify categories, main ideas, organization, and specific details. Writing: Master commonly used traditional and simplified characters, use the phonetic Pinyin system fluently, and employ common sentence structures and appropriate vocabulary to produce common writing styles on daily life, selected social topics and events studied in the course. Culture: Fluently describe the distinctive features of China, Chinese daily life and cultural aspects. Computer Equipment Requirement: Minimum requirements are: A current browser such as Internet Explorer, FireFox (Make sure you have a recent version: http://www.smccd.net/accounts/webready/browser.html Windows XP or above. At least 512 MB RAM Modem speed: 56K or high speed Internet is recommended Microphone and speaker or headset *Computers are available in the library, WL Center, or other campus resource centres. Software May Needed for This Course: Google Pinyin Chinese language package NJStar Communicator Assignments Submission: Assignments will all be turned in online. Students are expected to submit assignments on time to receive full credit. Late submission within two weeks will receive only partial credit. No submission accepted after two weeks of the due date. No late submission for AC online practice assignments. Final Examination/Project: The final examination will be comprehensive oral and written exams covering the lessons taught in the textbook. Grading Policy: The final grade will be based on the following: a. Completion of assignments on time 80% b.
