COURSE SYLLABUS -- CHINESE 111 OLH ELEMENTARY CHINESE I (Spring CRN 40244) Instructor: Jing Wu Office: Bldg 15-111 Office Hr: TW 5:30-6:30PM E-mail: csmchineseonline@smccd.edu Phone: (650) 574-6341 Textbook: Active Chinese (the instructor will provide the link) Course Description: Beginning Mandarin course. Practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The Writing will be in both pinyin phonetic system and Chinese characters. (AA: Area E5c, CSU: Area C2, UC) Course Content and Student Learning Outcomes: Instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing on Pinyin system and the following topics: greeting, family, dates and time, hobbies, visit friends. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Speaking: Master the pinyin phonetic system. Conduct basic oral communications, Produce accurate pronunciation and intonation. Listening: Understand short dialogues and narratives on daily life situations introduced in the textbook and supplementary material. Reading: Comprehend simple reading texts on personal and social matters. Use basic reading strategies to identify main ideas, organizations, and specific details. Writing: Master strokes and their orders, radicles. Write traditional characters, comprehend corelational simplified characters. Employ some basic sentence structures and vocabulary, produce coherent sentences, short paragraphs and alogues. Computer Equipment Requirement: Minimum requirements are: A current browser such as Internet Explorer, FireFox (Make sure you have a recent version: http://www.smccd.net/accounts/webready/browser.html Windows 2000 or above. At least 512 MB RAM Modem speed: 56K or high speed Internet is recommended Microphone and speaker or headset *Computers are available in the library, FL Center, or other campus resource centers. Software Maybe Needed for This Course: Chinese language package for Windows (simplified or traditional characters) Google Pinyin (PC and MAC) Assignments Submission: Assignments will all be turned in online. Students are expected to submit assignments on time to receive full credit. Late submission will receive partial credit. Submission two weeks after the due date will not receive credit. Final Examination/Project: The final examination will be comprehensive oral and written exams covering the lessons taught in the textbook. Class Conduct Policy: Practice regularly and turn in the assignments by the due dates. It is the student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw from the class. Students who engage in disruptive behavior – conduct that interferes with the instructional, administrative, or service functions of the course – can be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension and/or expulsion from the course and/or college. Students are responsible for adhering to the Code of Student Conduct outlined in the College Catalog and the Student Handbook, available online. Grading Policy: The final grade will be based on the following: a. Participation and good student conduct 10% b. Completion of homework and assignments on time 70% c.
