Matter and Energy Study Guide MEK1- I can describe photosynthesis. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) What is photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is the process by which a plant makes particles of sugar to use as food. Where does photosynthesis take place (which organelle)? Chloroplast What pigment makes photosynthesis possible? Chlorophyll What is the word form of the chemical equation for photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide + Water + Light Energy Glucose (sugar) + Oxygen What is the correct chemical formula for photosynthesis? 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 MEK2- I can describe what is required for organisms to grow and where this comes from. 6) 7) 8) What do plants need in order to function? Where does this come from? Carbon Dioxide, water and sunlight. Air, ground and sun. What do animals need in order to function? Where does this come from? Oxygen and food. Air and plants or animals that eat plants. How do what plants need and what animals need compare? Plants produce what animals need and animals produce what plants need. MEK3- I can describe cellular respiration. 9) What is cellular respiration? Cellular respiration is what cells do to break up sugars into a form that the cell can use as energy. It is a chemical reaction where glucose gets oxidized to release it’s energy. 10) What is the correct chemical formula for cellular respiration? C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy MEK4- I can list producers. 11) List at least three different types of producers. Plants, Trees, some bacteria, algae, some single celled organisms, aquatic plants, some moss. MER1- I can explain how photosynthesis cycles matter. 12) Explain how photosynthesis and cellular respiration work together to make a constant cycle of matter. Photosynthesis’ products are used as reactants in cellular respiration which has products that are used as reactants in photosynthesis. So the matter keeps cycling back and forth between the two cycles. MER2- I can explain photosynthesis in terms of energy flow. 13) Explain where the energy is coming from and where it is going in photosynthesis. Energy comes from the sun as light energy and is transformed into chemical energy in the glucose (sugar) that is produced in photosynthesis. MER3- I can explain that food goes through several chemical reactions to produce energy. 14) Write out the steps involved in food being eaten to usable energy in a cell. 1- Physical digestion of food into small pieces, 2- chemical digestion of food into starches, 3- starches broken down when needed, 4- sugars delivered to cells requiring energy, 5- cell use sugar in cellular respiration to create energy that is required. MER4- I can compare the products of cellular respiration and burning of fuels. 15) Write the equation for combustion and for cellular respiration. Respiration=C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy Combustion= CH4 + 2O2 CO2 + 2H2O + Heat Energy 16) Compare the products of combustion and cellular respiration. The products are exactly the same. The only difference is the type of energy that is released from the chemical reaction. MER5- I can compare anaerobic and aerobic respiration. 17) Compare and contrast anaerobic and aerobic respiration. Compare: They both break down glucose to release energy for cells. Contrast: Aerobic uses oxygen, is slower, is more efficient, produces more energy, and no harmful side products while Anaerobic does not use oxygen, is faster, less efficient, wastes lots of energy, and produces lactic acid as a side product.
