Information Page
The Industry Based Learning (IBL) course enables final semester business students to apply their skills and
experience in an external organisation (known as the host organisation) and learn through a critical reflective
process. The IBL 30 credit course requires a minimum of 220 hours of work within the organisation over a
semester. The IBL 15 credit course requires a minimum of 110 hours of work in the form of a project.
Are you eligible?
BBus pre-requisites
You must have completed 285 credits related to your major in the Bachelor of Business degree. Non-BBus
students should speak to their programme leader or the course co-ordinator before registration.
Four steps to enrolment
Step one: Attend an IBL information seminar the semester BEFORE your intended IBL enrolment period
and register your interest by completing the on-line registration form.
Step two: Create and have your CV approved by the Unitec Career Centre.
Step three: Complete the IBL Enrolment & Placement Plan Form (Must be signed by yourself and the
host organisation) and submit by scanning the document and emailing to ibl@unitec.ac.nz attention Denisa
Hebblethwaite (Management and Marketing students) or Carol McKnight (Accountancy and Finance
students). At least 2 weeks prior to the start of the semester.
Step four: Once you submit your signed Enrolment and Placement Plan you need to complete the online
Enrolment and Placement Form (Key Details) which can be found on the same BBus Moodle site.
You will be manually enrolled onto the course once step 4 has been completed and the Enrolment and
Placement Plan has been approved and you have met the course pre-requisites. An enrolment request will
be sent via email and once enrolled you will have access to the IBL course on Moodle.
For further enrolment information regarding IBL please contact either Denisa Hebblethwaite ( Management
and Marketing students) or Carol McKnight ( Accountancy and Finance students) on ibl@unitec.ac.nz.
The 15 credit option
If students are employed full-time in their discipline area they need to apply for a 15 credit IBL course (110
hour – Project only). Students who are completing a double major can also elect to complete a 15 credit IBL.
BBus students need to complete the 15 credit exemption form on Moodle and have it signed off by the BBus
Programme Leader.
Semester Course Work
Attend all SIX compulsory IBL Workshops (Day or Evening session) which provide guidance and advice
on how to maximise your learning experience and submit a successful e-portfolio. The compulsory
workshops prepare you to achieve the learning outcomes, by covering the assessment process and
assisting with personal and professional development planning. Refer to the BBus Timetable for dates, times
and room number.
