Although we call this a student program, we know that there are many individuals, researchers in hospitals and organizations who do research. This program accommodates all category of person’s wishing to do quality research. students, individuals and SRP is an exciting way for you (research organizations) to get hands-on experience while accommodating exploration in particular career fields. This is an easy to participate program that provides varying opportunities to change and enhance research and/or academic careers and interests. The key element of the program is to provide the opportunity to produce high quality thesis/project within a reasonable duration by providing vital assistance in research supervision in terms of facilities (research expertise, laboratory & internet) and latest journals. The program is meant to be on short-term basis. Research duration Time frame for studies is usually between one to six months. Objectives To stimulate research activities and create a scientifically conducive research environment for students to conduct independent or collaborative research To develop and advance the culture and quality of research in Africa. To support research supervision of lecturers who supervise students To ensure high quality of thesis/project research of SRP students (which would lead to reputable international refereed journal publication). To implement joint research by assigning thesis research topics to students and conducting joint thesis research supervision. What is This Program About? The SRP in the laboratory services of IBL is designed to challenge research-oriented students conducting research as a requirement for their graduation from Universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, schools of nursing etc. In this program, students conduct a research project under the mentorship of IBL researchers, through which the student becomes intellectually engaged in the whole research process. At the end of the research project, the student writes his project for oral presentation and defense in his/her host institution. This program targets doctorate, masters and first degree projects. However, other project can be accommodated depending on the academic merit of the project. The SRP provides an opportunity to get first-hand experience in substantive research. It is an excellent way to gain skills and insight into the academic process and can assist in making the decision to pursue a further degree where a dissertation is required. The program is challenging but rewarding, supported by a network of PhD supervisors. Each participant will develop new skills and enjoy scientific challenge and stimulation of cutting-edge research. Who should I consider the student Research Program? The SRP is an excellent opportunity for Individuals who are highly interested in research and wish to commit substantial time and intellectual energy to a project. SRP students experience the excitement of designing a project to generate new knowledge on a topic that interests them and reporting the project findings. By working with IBL mentors and other researchers, they develop skills in research methods and data analysis. Students also learn that research projects are labor intensive and that writing research reports, such as a thesis/project, is a vital, but time-consuming aspect of the research process. How Do You Apply to the Program? Students demonstrating scholastic achievement as well as satisfactory progress toward their degree requirements are invited to apply to the program. The following requirements must be met: 1) An application letter to the HRO. This must also contain information on how long you intend to stay on the program. 2) A letter from your supervisor or head of department supporting your application. 3) A problem statement that tells exactly what you want to do, including the research questions you want to answer. 4) Also list possible equipments that you may use during the program and a list of activities that you think would support your research. (Students may not be able to say exactly what they need. IBL may have to advise. Even the experienced researchers may need guidance). 5) A copy of your CV and two passport photographs Students may apply to the program at any time, provided that they can fulfill all program requirements. However, this is usually with the support of the student’s supervisor. Programs Offered We research broadly and also very specifically on a number of very specific research topics under the following theme: 1) Molecular biology 2) Electrophoresis 3) Vaccinology 4) Drug Resistance 5) Gene sequencing 6) Viral load 7) Serology 8) Virology 9) Immunology 10) Bacteriology 11) Parasitology 12) Chemical Pathology 13) Epidemiology 14) Diseases of veterinary importance Key elements of the program: The SRP was born out of the need to help students complete their research projects on record time and to expose students to state of the arts facilities. Through this process, participants are challenged to conduct scholarly research knowing their research will do more than “sit on the shelf" is a powerful motivation during the thesis-writing process. Students are matched with IBL staffs who serve as a mentor. The mentor relationship is highly individual, but mentors typically provide advice and support to foster the public service dimension of the thesis research, and to pursue larger questions of how this work relates to students career goals. During the program, the student is expected to attend the IBL weekly seminar. He/she will also be expected to make a presentation on his/her work. This presentation provides an opportunity to celebrate the results of their work. The program works as follows: with the consent of a student's academic department, the student comes to the IBL to do thesis/project research under the supervision of an IBL scientist. The duration of the appointment is flexible and may range from several days up to 3 months. The time spent at the IBL facility need not be continuous. Students from various universities in the country are already benefiting from this program. Fees: A token fee is charged for the program. These are established by the program based on the project and complexity of each evaluation. The program coordinator requires that we collect 50% of the charge before the program is commenced.
