LEARNING-FOCUSED Lesson Plan
Subject Area:
Plan for the concept, topic, or skill – Not for the class period
Name:
S. Paulinyce/ K. Strickland
Topic:
Physical / Chemical Properties and
Changes
Unit: Chemistry
Dates:
Learning Goals for this Lesson
Standards:
SC.912.P.8.2
Students will know:
Students will do:
physical vs. chemical properties and
physical vs. chemical changes
Explain the difference between a chemical and a
physical change using chemical and physical
properties.
Lesson Essential Question: How can you differentiate between a physical or chemical
change using physical or chemical properties?
Activating Strategy: What belongs to an Object pg. 131 TE? Students describe objects given to
them in a Ziploc bag.
Key vocabulary to preview and vocabulary strategy:
Volume, compressibility, density, conductivity, malleability, reactivity, molecular composition, filtration,
distillation, chromatography
Lesson Instruction
Learning Activity 1:
Graphic Organizer:
Students will create a graphic organizer that will identify the
characteristics of physical and chemical properties. Students will
read page 365-370 and take notes on what are characteristics of
physical properties and chemical properties of matter.
Cornell Notes
In Notes Graphic Organizer
Assessment Prompt for LA 1: Students will work in pairs and complete
mini labs to observe the physical and chemical properties of different
items/chemicals. (filtration, distillation, and chromatography)
Differentiation: Students can decide to work alone on the lab or
complete additional research using the internet.
Learning Activity 2:
Students will read and take notes on what are characteristics of
physical and chemical changes of matter.
Assessment Prompt for LA 2: Students will work in pairs and
complete mini labs to observe the physical and chemical changes
of different items/chemicals.
Differentiation: Students can decide to work alone on the lab or
complete additional research using the internet.

Assignment:
Students will be assigned to
complete a mystery powder
lab in which they will need
observe the physical/
chemical properties of each
substance and then observe
the changes/ reaction that
occurs when other
substances are added to the
powder. They will be able to
compare and contrast the
properties and changes of
the powder.
Learning Activity 3:
Assessment Prompt for LA 3:
Differentiation:
Summarizing Strategy:
3 ways to identify a chemical change
2 examples of something that represents a physical change
1 example of a physical property and one chemical property.
Student
Modification/Accommodations
1. Seat student near teacher.
2. Stand near student when giving
directions/presenting.
3. Provide visual aids/graphic organizers.
4. Ensure oral directions are understood.
5. Allow extra time to complete tasks.
6. Simplify complex written directions.
7. Give test items orally.
