II-006 Teacher (Staff) Evaluation and Development Course-Embedded Internship Log - 4 Course Number: EDLD 5345: Human Resource Management Place of Activity Lumberton ISD Time Spent on Activity 4 hours Description of the Activity Students complete the Cultural Proficiency Receptivity Scale, use the Cultural Proficiency Professional Development Rubric to assess the level of professional development at their campus or workplace, and identify and describe where and how their campus has responded to each of the elements of Cultural Proficiency. Personal Reflection/Learning: Focus reflection on the leadership skill. (Minimum of 150 Words) For this activity I decided to use my observations and experience from my former campus. I feel like it was a good place to start. I debated using my campus where I will intern, but I wanted to look at a campus that needed more improvement so I could get a better understanding of the importance of Cultural Proficiency. I evaluated the campus and drew from experiences I had while there. I tried to reflect on each response and think of an event or occurrence that would fit on the scale. Working on a campus which at the time did not have many cultural variations led to very few opportunities for cultural growth. While the campus atmosphere began to change in my last two years the district is in the beginning stages of becoming culturally aware and competent. One of the biggest areas of concern I remember is the lack of understanding about cultural differences and how they directly impact learning. A one size fits all approach does not work. I attribute not to the district’s inability to change, but the lack of experience it presently had. With a rapidly growing district many new opportunities for cultural awareness and proficiency are being presented.
