Course Expectatations AP Senior English 2013-2014 Rick DelleChiaie Contact Info: 978-794-1711 Ext. 50120 Email: dellechiaier@northandover.k12.ma.us Course Overview: Senior AP English is a college level World Literature class which explores the literature from man’s earliest writings through modern times. Through the study of the classics from world literature students will learn to analyze and synthesize the themes from disparate cultures and time periods. A number of academic disciplines are brought to bear in the exploration of this literature and its universal themes such as psychology, anthropology, philosophy, and history. The theme of the hero and his journey will be explored thoroughly as well the universal symbols that accompany this theme. The course also prepares the student for the AP Literature and Composition exam which culminates the course. Papers are to be printed out and handed in personally, not emailed. Homework Policy AP English is a reading intensive course. Students are expected to be reading every night and will usually have at least two books that they are reading at the same time. Attendance: Attendance policy is as outlined in the student handbook. If students can’t attend this class then they should not be enrolled in this class. Make-up policy is outlined in the student handbook. Class Behavior: Students are expected to behave in a mature and respectful manner at all times and to use language that is appropriate in a classroom environment. The purpose of World Literature studies is to promote understanding of the roots of our own culture through comparative study. Students will study the formation of culture, beliefs, and values in other civilizations through philosophical, religious, and mythological systems of thought. The hero’s journey, a pervasive world-wide cultural motif, provides the archetype for comparisons and contrasts between ancient and modern cultures. Writing assignments, occurring less frequently, will be due in hard copy form on the pre-designated due and subject to a 5 point deduction for the first day late and 10 points for every day after. After 5 days late, points earned, if any, are subject to the discretion of the teacher. No emailed papers will be accepted. Attendance/Make-up Privileges: Students are subject to credit reduction as outlined in the school handbook for chronic tardiness/absence. Make-up privileges for missed work are in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the student handbook. Class Behavior: Students are expected to come to class ready to learn. They are to behave respectfully toward their peers and to their teacher and to use language that is appropriate to the classroom environment.
