LETTER OF ENGAGEMENT
Document guidance
This model letter of engagement has been developed to support organisations who intend to engage
fishermen in a marine litter project. The purpose of the letter of engagement is to set out the agreed
roles and responsibilities of fishermen in the project.
This model letter of engagement is intended to be flexible and be adapted according to the
objectives and activities of each project. Text in brackets or highlighted in grey should be adapted to
your project.

Letter of commitment as participant in

With this letter, I, [Name of the participant], agree that I will participate in [Name of the project]
from [Start date of the project] to [end date of the project].
My role in the project will consist of [modify as needed]:

Retain on board the litter caught in my nets in the [big bags distributed by [Name of
organisation] for this purpose].

Bring back the big bags to the shore and dispose them in the [reception facilities provided for
that purpose].

[Display the logo of the project on my vessel and participate to raising the awareness of
other fishermen on the project].


In participating in this project, I agree to:

Not discharge any litter produced on board or collected in my nets at sea.

Fill the big bags provided by the [Name of organisation] with marine litter collected at sea
only and not waste produced on board.


I acknowledge that my participation is voluntary and I will not receive any fee for completing the
activities stated above. I can end my participation in the project at any time by communicating that I
no longer wish to participate to [Name of organisation] and returning all equipment provided by
[Name of organisation].
