WALLETS MARTS CASTLE DOUGLAS LIMITED MONDAY 13TH OCTOBER 2014 STORE CATTLE, OTM CATTLE & BREEDING CATTLE Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited sold 114 OTM Cattle, 135 Store Cattle 129 Breeding Cattle and 88 Breeding Tups at their sale on Monday 13th October. One of the largest shows of OTM cattle this season met with an improved demand despite being a poorer show quality wise. Topping the section at £1099.64 was a Limousin cow from Farhills whilst the top price per kg for cows was 150p paid to Messrs C Birrell & Co, Barnboard. Overage prime heifers sold to 185p per kg for Charolais crosses from Straith Estates. Overall averages levelled at 106.3p per kg. Store Cattle met with a steady demand selling to £1310 for a Limousin bull stirk from C Birrell & Co, Barnboard. Bullocks topped at £1115 again for Limousin crosses from Barnboard and to 226.6p from the same home. Heifers sold well to £1110 for Simmental crosses from R McKinnel & Sons, Garrarie. The annual October breeding sale was attended by a packed ringside and included the final portion of the Merkland Luing dispersal from John and Malcolm Fawcett. The dispersal topped at £1650 for a Luing Cow with her Simmental cross heifer calf at foot which sold to Mr D Sawrij, Kedzile Farm. Bulling Heifers and Heifer Stirks were also easily cashed selling to £1300 for a pen of three which were purchased by Messrs Warden, Skelfhill. 14 Luing cows and calves averaged £1367.86 whilst maiden heifers averaged £1153.06. Commercial breeding cattle also met a fast selling trade topping at £2250 for a Limousin cross heifer with her Limousin heifer calf at foot from J Fisher, Flathill. Flathill consignment of 14 heifers with calves averaged £1942.86 whilst 7 AA & Sim heifers with calves from Low Arkland topped at £2000 and averaged £1707.14. Suffolk, Texel and Bluefaced Leicester Rams were a mixed show for quality and sold to a top price of £500 for a Texel Shearling from Douganhill Farms. Top priced lamb was £450 for a Texel from Martin Smith, Low Arkland. The Blackface Ram section was topped at £550 for a shearling from Drannadow Farms.
