WELCOME TO FIRST GRADE AT C. W. DUNCAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL August 25, 2014 Dear Parents, Wow, where did the summer go? I hope you and your family had an enjoyable summer vacation. My name is Mrs. Dorcas Clark and I will be your child’s first grade teacher for the 2014-2015 school year. The following information should answer most questions that you may have about my classroom expectations and procedures. CLASSROOM RULES 1. Be in your assigned seat/area ready to work when the bell rings. 2. Have paper, pencil, books, and other needed supplies every day. 3. Keep hands, feet, books, and other objects to yourself. 4. No cursing, rude gestures or comments, teasing, or put downs. 5. Follow directions of school personnel. 6. Stay with your class. Behavior Plan GREEN= EXCELLENT BEHAVIOR ALL DAY! YELLOW= SATISFACTORY BEHAVIOR (warning: Student broke 1 rule) Blue= NEEDS IMPROVEMENT (Student broke 2 rules) RED= UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR (Student broke more than 2 rules) *A color- coding system will be used to keep track of consequences. The colors are green, yellow, blue and red. Please refer to the colors and consequences below. Your child will have a monthly behavior chart in their “black” homework folder that needs to be “ INITIALED DAILY” by you. During the FIRST SEMESTER if your child receives a $1.00 or more at the end of the school week, they may go to the treasure box on Friday or the last day of that week. During the SECOND SEMESTER your child needs to receive FOUR QUARTERS a week, to go to the treasure box. “If your child FORGETS their folder they will MISS their STAMP for that day. “ They are RESPONSIBLE for their folders getting to school each day. Color Consequences The following are the consequences for the color-coding system: 1. 25 cents= Green= Every student begins the day on green. 2. 20 cents= Yellow= 1st warning: The student has been spoken to and will lose 5 minutes of their recess time. 3. 5 cents = Blue= 2nd warning: The student has been spoken to and will lose 10 minutes of their recess time. The student will also be sent to a refocus area in the classroom. 4. 1 cent= Red= The student has been spoken to and will lose all of their recess time. The student will also be sent to a buddy room for a refocus period. 5. If the student still chooses to break rules after being on red they will be spoken to, lose all of their recess, and you will receive a note or phone call from me. The student also might possibly be sent to the Principal’s Office on an Office Referral. Behaviors that will result in being sent IMMEDIATELY to the office: 1. Fighting or threatening to fight. 2. Damaging or destroying student, teacher, or school property. 3. Engaging in behavior that creates an unsafe situation, is sexually provocative, or interrupts the teacher’s ability to teach. Please go to the KISD website to view the KISD Student Code of Conduct. COMMUNICATION Wednesday Folders •Each Wednesday your child will take home a Wednesday Folder. Inside the folder will be any graded work and important notes/letters from the school. Take out any papers that do not need to be returned. Please empty the contents in the folder , unless it is a paper that needs a parent signature. RETURN the Wednesday folder with your child on THURSDAY. Progress Reports •Progress Reports are sent home in the middle of each nine-week grading period. Please sign it and have your child RETURN it to school the next day. Report Cards •Report Cards are sent home at the end of each nine-week grading period. Please sign it and have your child return it the next day. Conference Period •My conference time is from 9:50-10:35 on Mondays, Wednesdays , Thursdays, and Fridays. Please feel free to call me @ 336-1620 if you should have any questions or concerns. CLASSROOM VISITS All visitors MUST sign in at the office before entering a classroom. Please do not stop by a classroom unexpectedly. This interrupts learning. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY I place a lot of emphasis on student responsibility. Students in my class are expected to act responsibly in all areas. This includes following all classroom behavior expectations, returning any classroom work [that had to be taken home] on time, making sure that all graded work sent home in the Wednesday Folder is seen by you, and generally being a good citizen of our school. I realize that kids are kids and they will make mistakes, and I won’t nitpick over the smallest misbehaviors. However, it is my philosophy that the basics of proper school behavior are learned at home and should be practiced diligently in 1st grade. HOMEWORK Every Monday there will be a homework contract with their homework. All the homework will be due on Friday. AND IN CLOSING... Parents please know that I am here for your son or daughter. There isn’t anything that I wouldn’t do to help your child succeed. My conference time is 9:50-10:35 everyday but Tuesdays and Thursdays and after school from 3:30 to 3:45 if needed. Thank you so much in advance for your support. Your child WILL BENEFIT as a result of parents and teachers working together. Sincerely, Mrs. Dorcas Clark Please fill out this part and have your child RETURN it to me at school. Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------To Mrs. Dorcas Clark: My child and I have read the Classroom Expectations, Behavior Plan (consequences), and Immediate Behaviors Sent to the Office.
