Stone Barns Center Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture is a non-profit farm and education center located in Pocantico Hills, New York. Stone Barns operates an 80-acre four-season farm and is working on broader initiatives to create a healthy and sustainable food system. Through our farm innovation and experimentation, Growing Farmers Initiative, children’s education programs, and diverse public awareness programs, we work to change the way America eats and farms. Livestock Manager - Herdsman Stone Barns Center has an opening for a full-time Livestock Manager. Reporting to the Farm Director, the Manager is responsible for the management of all aspects of livestock production associated with the Center’s multispecies livestock program. The Manager will focus his/her responsibilities on developing a Conservation Grazing Plan for approximately 200 acres of pasture within an established state park preserve. He/she will be responsible for working with the Farm Director to identify and engage (through relationships and projects) the most progressive resilient agricultural systems including multispecies and intensive grazing operations in North America and to develop his/herself as an expert practitioner. Additionally, the Manager will be responsible for on-farm innovations associated with agroecology, animal welfare practices, and farming methods that advance ecosystem services and resilience. The Manager must have previous experience with large ruminant animals and a clear understanding of grassland & pasture ecosystems management. The Manager will work within an integrated team of farmers (animal, vegetable, mineral) to develop a resilient agro-ecological system and exploit symbiotic relationships between animals, plants and soil. Responsibilities: Manage Livestock Husbandry Operations o Manage health, maintenance and breeding of cattle o Develop, implement and monitor grazing plan(s) o Manage Stockpile and Haying Program o Maintain highest quality animal welfare and health practices o Oversee breeder, supplier and other participatory contacts Manage Livestock Infrastructure Operations o Assist Farm Director in operational design of all livestock systems o Oversight of livestock infrastructure including buildings, utilities, tools and equipment o Oversight of processing operations o Manage budget for livestock operation Manage Livestock Labor Operations o Manage 3-6 staff o Work with team to provide accurate and timely product and scheduling information Participate on Farm Management team o Develop and execute experimental projects to advance our farm principles o Coordinate innovations and R&D pertinent to livestock with Farm team, Programs departments and on-site restaurant partner. Examples: Progressing Infrastructure and Fencing Carbon-Cycling o Breeding Integrated Crop & Animal Husbandry Practices Waste feeding Act as a spokesperson for the Center on topics such as: Intensive grazing Winter stockpiling and rations Integrated agricultural practices Required Skills and Experience: Commitment to Stone Barns Center’s mission Previous experience with large ruminant animals at a production scale A clear understanding of grassland & pasture ecosystems management, as well as a developed understanding of supplementary feeding Well organized, able to prioritize and manage a full and diverse workload, take initiative and be proactive Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team Supervisory and staff management experience Professional maturity and strong interpersonal skills Excellent communications skills Compensation: Stone Barns Center offers a salary commensurate with experience and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, a 401k plan and paid time off.
