Wednesday. This
week they have a
guest speaker
John Vaughan

Many Catholics experience the
feeling of being stuck in a rut – as
if they were just 'going through
the motions'. In a talk, entitled
“Change me, Lord”, John
Vaughan Neil, an inspiring and
entertaining speaker, will share
from his own experience to
illustrate how we can come alive
in Jesus and find a whole new
dimension to living our faith.

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR AT THE KAIROS CENTRE. The Kairos Retreat Centre in Roehampton is offering various
retreats over Christmas and New Year. Please see the poster in the Church Porch for more details.
This week we celebrate the feast of the dedication of the Basilicas of SS. Peter & Paul.
St. Peter’s is probably the most famous church in Christendom. Massive in scale and a veritable museum of
art and architecture, it began on a much humbler scale. The Vatican Hill was a simple cemetery where
believers gathered at St. Peter’s tomb to pray. In 319 Constantine built on the site a basilica that stood for
more than a thousand years until, despite numerous restorations, it threatened to collapse. In 1506 Pope
Julius II ordered a new church to be built which eventually took nearly 200 years to complete.
St. Paul’s Outside the Walls was also built by Constantine and stands near the Abaazia delle Tre Fontane,
where St. Paul is believed to have been beheaded, it was the largest church in Rome until St. Peter’s was
rebuilt. In 1823 a disastrous fire destroyed the church, which was then rebuilt.
St. Peter, the rough fisherman whom Jesus named the rock on which the Church is built, and the educated
Paul, reformed persecutor of Christians, Roman citizen and missionary to the Gentiles, were quite
different people
but they both shared the same journey of faith which led to them sharing a martyr’s death in Rome—Peter
on a cross and Paul beneath the sword. Their combined gifts shaped the early Church and believers have
prayed at their tombs from the earliest days.
Last week Fr. Vincent and a group from the parish had the privilege of making the same journey and at the
tombs of the Apostles they, prayed for our parish of St. Raphael and all those who worship here.
