CLASS TITLE: BIOLOGICAL SCIENTIST IV
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is independent professional work in one of the following areas: (1) identifying and processing plant
specimens; (2) identifying and classifying arthropods; (3) serving as nematode or biological specimen
collection curator; (4) conducting nematode control experiments; (5) planning, organizing, and
coordinating plant pathological research programs; or (6) planning, organizing and coordinating
biochemical, biological, ecological or fisheries statistical programs.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Identifies and processes microbial, animal or plant specimens and prepares specimens for a
collection.
Conducts microbial, floral or faunal surveys, performs species revisionary studies, curates and
labels specimens and prepares publications on work performed.
Isolates and identifies nematodes, microorganisms, plants or animals from their habitat and
reviews manuscripts prepared for publication.
Plans, directs, and participates in pathogen identification, inoculation tests, plant disease
surveys and other plant pathology activities.
Analyzes vertebrate or invertebrate fisheries data for population assessment and trends.
Conducts microbial, plant or animal life history, physiology or genetic studies.
Conducts ecological analyses on microbial, plant or animal distributions, habitats and
interrelationships.
Performs related work as required.

Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in biological research, analysis or
testing.
Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in laboratory testing and
analysis.
Knowledge of the methods of data collection.
Skill in the use of scientific laboratory and field equipment.
Ability to collect, record and analyze scientific data relating to the biological sciences.
Ability to conduct biological research, studies or analyses using scientific methods and
techniques.
Ability to perform quantitative analysis of scientific data.
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.
Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to
the biological sciences.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one
of the biological sciences and three years of professional biological experience in a field or
laboratory program; or
A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of
the biological sciences and two years of professional experience as described above; or
A doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the
biological sciences.
