Earthquake or Volcano Project Overview: For this project you will research a significant earthquake or volcano of your choosing and you will create a brochure or poster to display your findings. The required information for each project is found below. Each Poster or Brochure needs the following: -Neat and organized presentation -4-5 pictures, graphics, charts, etc. -works cited Earthquake Research: -Where and when did the earthquake occur? -What caused the earthquake? -type of fault and location of fault zone -Describe the 2 scales used to measure the strength of an earthquake and how your earthquake rated for both. (Mercalli and Richter) -Define focus and epicenter and describe the location of each of these for your earthquake. -Describe the total damage, injuries and deaths. -What was the cause of damage, injury, and death? Was the region prepared? Did they have safe buildings for earthquakes? Was there a tsunami? -If there was a tsunami you must also describe how it formed, how large, how fast, and how much damage it caused. -Explain some safety precautions people in areas of earthquakes should do in order to stay safe during an earthquake. >>>>>>>Or you could research a volcano >>>>>> Volcano Research: -Where and when did the volcano occur? -What caused the volcano? -type of fault or hot spot -Describe the three main kinds of volcanoes and what kind of volcano you are researching. -shield, composite, cinder cone -Describe the total damage, injuries and deaths. -What was the cause of damage, injury, and death? Was the region prepared? Did they have advanced warning? -What do scientists do to monitor volcanoes? Describe how they can monitor the seismology, gas emissions, land deformation, etc. Was any of this done before your volcano erupted? -Explain what a pyroclastic flow is and whether or not your volcano made one. - Explain some safety precautions people in areas of volcanoes should do in order to stay safe during a volcano.
