Job title: Youth Achievement Foundation (YAF) Maths Teacher Salary: £25,000 - £30,000 pa dependent on experience Contract: Fixed term until July 2015 Hours of Work: Full time, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday Based at: Greenwich Reporting to: YAF Manager Purpose of the job: To deliver and lead on the Youth Achievement Foundation Maths with the potential of additional responsibilities on the Further Education Programme curriculum and ensure high standards of engagement and Teaching and Learning to a predominately Key Stage 3 and 4 SEBD and 16+ learner cohorts delivered via small groups covering 30-40 registered learners. Duties and responsibilities Professional Behaviour: To maintain high standards of professional behaviour towards colleagues, learners and the public. To be a role model for young people. To develop a relationship with young people which is professional and supportive. Preparation: Provide the curriculum lead and direction for Maths at the Youth Achievement Foundation and potentially having responsibilities working with 16+ learners for the FE Programme. For each Maths programme taught (GCSE, Functional skills,), to write and/or work with others to write schemes of work which address the programme’s objectives making provision for variety in learning styles and assessment activities suitable to the learner cohort. To ensure for each Maths session delivered at the YAF a suitable lesson plan is in place which supports well-structured and varied learning objectives meeting the learning needs of all young people and enabling them to be confident in their learning. To create and provide guidance/support in implementing and embedding Maths cross curricular at the YAF. Share curriculum knowledge and expertise, and liaise with all tutors and staff delivering or supporting Maths lessons and ensure all relevant information is cascaded down to all staff. Teaching: To deliver engaging and motivating lessons to learners across both Key Stage 3 and 4 and possibly 16+ learners To identify and differentiate for groups of learners within the assigned Maths teaching groups. To use ICT and other learning technology in the planning and delivery of lessons. To manage behaviour in accordance with relevant behaviour policies, ensuring that rewards and sanctions are used consistently as described within the policy. To communicate learning objectives clearly and provide a variety of learning activities which maintain interest and meet the needs of individuals. To use assessment activities which test the learning of young people and feedback to them in a way to strengthen their understanding and to make them confident in their learning Assessment: To regularly mark and feedback to learners in line with the YAF assessment systems. To interrogate and interpret relevant data to use as an achievement tool. To monitor learners’ work regularly and be responsible for associated paperwork, tracking and recording. To develop assessments and/or work with others to develop assessments that are purposeful for YAF learners. To provide appropriate and constructive feedback using assessment information that involves learners and promotes learning through questioning. To conduct and record assessments which adhere to the particular requirements of individual learning programmes, and where appropriate, external bodies. Assess and advise on learners Maths levels and relevant standards and develop standards file. Young People’s Progress: To track learner progress through assessment and reporting within each teaching groups. To identify learners at risk of underachievement in liaison with YAF management, Lead staff and LSA’s/Mentors, and ensure that appropriate interventions are in place. To contribute to and inform the YAF quality cycle by producing accurate progress information, keeping appropriate records of assessment decisions and learners’ progress. To monitor and record progress of learners against national benchmarks Monitor the progress of Gifted and Talented Maths Learners. Collect photographs relating to “special days” and create learners displays. Personal Development: Be willing to attend relevant courses/conferences that will stimulate and enhance the role of Teacher of Maths and wider role within the YAF community. To take responsibility for keeping up-to-date with subject knowledge and in maintaining personal professional development. Keep up to date with National Curriculum/GSCE/Functional Skills requirements and changes in statutory requirements CACT Curriculum Development: To take part in the whole school programme of quality assurance. To engage in the self-review processes within the YAF. To work as a team supporting Faculty members in spreading and sharing good practice. To attend and where appropriate contribute to YAF meetings and weekly briefing. Other Specific Duties: To continue personal development as agreed at appraisal. Person Specification ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE The successful applicant will be educated to degree standard and hold a QTS teaching qualification Masters, or higher degree Experience of delivering GCSE and Functional Skills Maths and knowledge of the Maths National Curriculum for teaching at KS3/KS4 Experience of entering learners for the appropriate accredited Maths examinations and assessment Experience of developing and creating a curriculum framework for a diverse ability group which takes into account SEBD learner needs A good concept of recent curriculum changes Hold a current, satisfactory Charlton Athletic Enhanced DBS/CRB check Experience or relevant training in Safeguarding A secure knowledge and understanding of the concepts and skills essential for success for learners in Maths Successful experience in a position of responsibility Self-motivated sound organiser and can employ a variety of innovative and imaginative teaching strategies that promote high expectations and high levels of engagement in the classroom The ability to make use of an understanding of ICT to develop teaching resources as well as to enrich the curriculum Ability to plan for progression in learning, using intervention as required Experience of supporting learning for SEBD young people in the area of Maths The ability to use assessment for learning to improve teaching and learning as well as assess and record learner progress Experience of working in alternative education and/or with SEBD learners A desire to work with SEBD learners and a commitment to inspire, motivate and raise learner achievement Experience of supporting and mentoring Maths student placements A commitment to working collaboratively with other staff and curriculum areas A ability to be a reflective and evaluative practitioner who is willing to learn and continue own personal and professional development Ability to demonstrate experience of working with other agencies and curriculum leads effectively to develop programmes of activities Evidence of further personal and professional development Be able to plan, manage, evaluate and monitor own work and designated curriculum area and have a flexible open approach to change Experience in leading and developing and managing a curriculum area Able to apply effective behaviour management strategies in a variety of situations Experience of 1:1 offsite or home tuition Willingness to contribute to faculty extra-curricular Activities and to work ‘unsocial’ hours if required Ability and desire to work on CACT and partner agency other education programmes Full driving license
