A number of themes, essential for the political development of Russia/Soviet Union and the United
States—seen as opposite poles--will be analyzed from a comparative viewpoint. The bi-cultural
approach will allow students to form a unique perspective on common features of the two societies.
The course emphasizes controversial aspects of the political life in Russia and the US, examined
against the countries’ divergent socio-cultural and psychological backgrounds, traditions, and
influences. Contradictory processes in comparative history will illuminate deeper and more general
issues relevant to political thinking and decision-making over the past two centuries, leading into
modernity and post-modernity.

Readings by specialists from various fields will expound upon key aspects of political life, such as
revolutions, nationalism, state ideologies, and role of the individual in public life. Students will learn
how specific circumstances in national traditions in Russia and the US yielded dissimilar impact on
political developments and distinct behavior patterns. Differences in state attitudes towards
comparable phenomena, such as civil and foreign conflicts, expansionist ambitions, and domestic
policy will serve as signposts, demarcating boundaries of political experience.

Students will learn about diverse methodologies and controversial interpretations of key themes
relevant to comparative political cultures in Russia and the US. As a class, we will have a chance
to discuss scholarly viewpoints and be part of the on-going debate among cultural elites in both

societies about their national experiences. An important goal of this course is to provide students
with intellectual tools and methods of understanding political processes in multi-cultural context.
