ART NEWS JUNE 2015 It’s here…that final month of school…and then summer break! June is a hectic month here at PS166-but in a good way…celebrations abound! Our kindergarteners make the leap to first grade in their Stepping Up celebration, and our fifth graders graduate and say good-bye to a place many have attended for six years! In September they will head off for middle school-and I truly wish each, and everyone, of our graduates the best the world has to offer! And of course congratulations on all of your hard work here at PS166! What’s going on in KINDERGARTEN? Thank you to those who volunteered and helped with the art fair! A special thanks to Justin and his mom-your assistance was invaluable! Kindergarteners are finishing up their incredibly colorful and beautiful Eric Carle inspired collages-I hope you all have wall space, because the kids will be bringing home their art in the next few weeks! THIRD GRADE ARTISTS Third graders just completed beautiful copper foil pieces with raised/embossed surfaces. Many of them will be on view on the third floor. As we end this year, students will work on creating figures, or small sculptures of people showing movement, from aluminum foil. Work will be being sent home with (all) students in the next couple of weeks. NEWS FROM FIRST GRADEFirst graders are completing the last touches to their sweet themed, Wayne Thiebaud, inspired chalk pastel/paintings. I am hopeful that we will complete one last project using symmetry. Students will take what they learned on their trip to the Natural History museum about butterflies to create their final art piece. FOURTH GRADE NEWS When students finish up their collography prints-each student made two-one on black paper, and one on white paper, they will then design a mask. Students will consider why different culture use masks, and how and why they use them. Students will look at a type of Mexican folk art mask called a TONA mask. A Tona- is an animal that represents yourself…example: If you are a really fast runner, your Tona might be a jaguar, or a cheetah, or if you are graceful your Tona might be a gazelle. I cannot promise that all classes will be able to complete these-but I will give it my best! SECOND GRADE NEWS: Alexander Calder inspired kinetic mobiles are hanging up in the art room-they will be coming home soonand they look fantastic! I am hopeful that we will squeeze in one last project if time permits! It’s been a true pleasure second graders! WHAT ARE THE FIFTH GRADERS UP TO IN ART? With trips, and tests, performances, and schedule switches it’s not always easy to get projects completed…This being said, the kids are finishing up the Inuit Myth and Arctic Animal project. In the next few weeks as we wrap things up, I will be giving back the student work done throughout the year…and I will attempt to get some of the kids who are finished to move onto an Aboriginal inspired dot painting. Congrats to you all! It’s been a pleasure getting to know you all and watch you grow as artists! I hope you will take what I have taught you to your new school and flourish even further as artists! Important dates to remember: June 1st & June 3rd: Second graders field trip to the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum And, as always-a huge end of year thank you for your continued support, and contributions throughout the year! A huge shout out to those who volunteered their time in making the art fair the huge success that it has come to be! And a big thanks from all those who enjoyed the generosity of your donations of food and beverage for the show! These events cannot be done without the support of our parents-it takes a community-and I feel blessed to be part of such a great one here at PS166! So, Cheers to summer-to relaxing, enjoying, reading, swimming, family time, travel, doing the things that get put off throughout the year, and anything else you might be doing on your break! Take advantage of what this city has to offer-so many amazing museums with family days, and free, or pay what you wish admission days, galleries, concerts in the parks around NY, festivals, etc.; just get out there and enjoy!
