Understanding Medieval Collections
Grant R07/08: Ballymoney Museum
Since 2008, NIMC has operated a Collections Research grant programme. Ballymoney
Museum used this to build upon its documentation and knowledge of preserved medieval
wood artefacts through employing specialist expert, Dr. Caroline Earwood, who helped to
identify their age, provenance and function. The group had previously been conserved and
carbon dated through a grant in 2007 from the Northern Ireland Museums Council. The
project provided the Museum with the knowledge to display the artefacts in the re-fit of the
Ballymoney Museum permanent exhibition which opened in 2009.
