School Council Meeting ~ Thursday 24th September Minutes Agenda: The 5 Rs & the playground 1) Minutes of the last meeting: Three councillors had shared the minutes of the previous meeting with their class. Mrs Clarke reminded them of the need to organise a class council between meetings. 2) The 5 R’s: Resilience is our focus for this half term. Which animal or character could we use to show Resilience? Think about the traits of different animals or characters. Each class rep shared the ideas their class had given for an animal or character. The long list was then shortened and the school councillors voted for Rat from Ice Age as he shows great resilience in trying to get the nut! 3) Choosing a school anthem: can you suggest some songs that would be good school anthems? Remember the lyrics must be suitable. The children shared titles of lots of different songs there class mates had suggested. Mrs Clarke looked at the lyrics of the songs and found that lots of them were not really suitable for using as our school anthem. She has created a short list of the ones that were more suitable for classes to vote on. 4) Playground zones: As we move towards having younger children on our playground, how could we zone the areas to ensure children are safe? We discussed the need for ‘safe areas’ on the playground where children can play without being hit by a ball. We also discussed the suggestion of segregating children by age, which we decided we didn’t want to do. It was suggested that the area between the Sports Hall and the Basketball pitch is for small balls only, throwing and catching, no kicking, to improve safety. 5) Any other business/AOB: Year 6 asked for pencil cases: Mrs Clarke explained why they were unnecessary as they create issues with children fiddling and arguing. More pens are available in the stock cupboard. A further request was made for bacon butties: Mrs Clarke reiterated that they are not allowed under the School Food Standards. Could we have a quiet hut on the playground? Mrs Clarke said there are plans as we get younger children on the playground to develop different spaces. Year 3 complained that their toilets are too small: Mrs Clarke apologised but they had to be that size in preparation for year 1 next year. Concerns were raised that year 6 children are being unkind to year 3 and year 4 children: Mrs Clarke to speak to year 6.
