Johnston Central Library Thought for June! “Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill. Without books, the development of civilization would have been impossible. They are engines of change (as the poet said), windows on the world and lighthouses erected in the sea of time”. Barbara W. At the age of 16 he joined a flying column attached to the Carrickallen branch of the IRA and became commanding officer 3 years later. He was captured and court martialed in July1921 and sentenced to death, but was released in January 1922. He fought on the anti treaty side in the civil war and was interred by Free State forces in Dundalk & Newbridge. He was first elected to the Dail for the Cavan constituency in the 1923 general election, was a founder member of Fianna Fail, & topped the poll for the first time in 1933, & on every subsequent occasion up to 1965. He became parliamentary secretary to the Taoiseach in 1938, & Minister for Agriculture in 1947, when he initiated a scheme to compensate farmers for heavy losses incurred during the harsh weather of that year. He was also in charge of agriculture from 1957 to 1964 when farm prices were depressed & there were limited export market opportunities. He opposed his government when it intervened in a building strike in October 1964, & accused trade unionism of tyranny. He resigned his ministry and remained on the backbenches until 1977, by which time he was ‘father of the house’. He was the first minister of the state to resign on a matter of principle. He was a quintessential rural TD, with a deep and genuine interest in the affairs of his county. On his resignation, the Irish Times described him as ‘a man of real warmth and charm’. He married Mary Teresa Ward in 1936 and they had six children. He died on 18th March 1982.
