Another first for our Library Service!
Johnston Central Library’s Public computer
network has been upgraded. Top of the range
mini eco-friendly P.C.s are now in place.
We are the first library in Ireland to have the
new Shuttle xs36v computers which are 90%
more energy efficient than standard PCs. We
expect significant energy savings annually as
a result. The shuttles PCs create a nicer work
environment for our users, are easier for staff
to manage and also meet our Information
Technology needs.

November!
“There is not such a
cradle of democracy
upon the earth as the
free public library, this
republic of letters, where
neither rank, office, nor
wealth receives the
slightest consideration”
Andrew Carnegie
Thanks to the initiative of Cavan County
Council’s Information Technology and Energy
Teams, the Library Service was provided with
substantial funding and all the support
necessary to put this fantastic new facility in
place.
Good news for our library service, it is also
one more initiative that brings Cavan County
Council closer to achieving a statutory 33%
reduction in energy use by 2020.
Pictured above are the people who delivered
this initiative: Peadar Smith and Padraic
Gaffney, I.T. Section, Jim McQuaid, Engineer,
Environment Section, Martina Rooney and
Teresa Treacy, Library Service.

Oliver
Goldsmith
1730-1774
A ’Biggar’ Purchase
by Cavan County
Library Service!
Oliver Goldsmith was born on
November 10th, 1730 in
Pallasmore, Co. Longford. At
the age of eight he had a
severe attack of smallpox
which disfigured him for life.
He received a B.A. degree
from Trinity College Dublin,
before he left Ireland in 1752
to study medicine in
Edinburgh, but ended up
wandering through Europe,
supporting himself by
begging and by playing the
flute.His most famous works
are his novel, The ‘Vicar of
Wakefield’, and his play, ‘She
Stoops to Conquer’, a
Comedy. He was extravagant
in taste and recklessly
generous, to the extent that
he died leaving debts of
£2000, in the spring of 1774,
and is buried in London.
Joseph Biggar
1828-1890
Cavan County Library Service recently purchased an important rare photograph by
William Lawrence of Joseph Gillis Biggar (1828-1890), the Home Rule member of
parliament for Cavan. Lawrence had a collection of more than 30,000 photographs
of scenes throughout Ireland and this archive was acquired by the National
Library in 1943. Joseph Biggar is Belfast born and was a member of the Home
Rule League and later the Irish Parliamentary Party . He served as an MP for
Cavan from 1874 to 1885, and West Cavan from 1885 until his death in 1890. He
was known for giving long speeches (filibustering) to delay passage of Irish
Coercion Acts, and to obstruct the business of the House of Commons in order to
force the government to negotiate with Irish nationalists.
Cavan library service also acquired the catalogue of books and bound
manuscripts of Irish historical, archaeological and antiquarian interest of Francis
Joseph Biggar ( nephew of Joseph Biggar). The catalogue includes material
belonging to Joseph Biggar and contains Cavan items. The catalogue collection is
housed in Belfast Public Library.
