Reflection from Fr. Hilary: Serious Unethical Attitudes
Recently King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia died. An official British Government statement praised him for his peace efforts
and helping dialogue between religions. Nonsense, because it is well known that Saudi represses all religions except
Sunni Islam. It also promoted war abroad. Some thousands of Filipinos work hard there but Saudi Arabia doesn’t lift a
finger to help them live their Catholic Faith. But God help Britain if it didn’t allow them to build their mosques here and
have freedom to practise their faith! What a cheek.
And what about Britain’s relationship with China? The appalling occupation of Tibet for 65 years is always played down.
“Don’t you dare meet the Dalai Lama” is China’s command to the Prime Minister “or we won’t do business with you”.
Human rights in China? It supresses free speech, imprisons its critics. It clamps down on religious movements it doesn’t
approve of. God help anyone who speaks out. Fear abounds. Putting business before morality is the approach of British
Foreign policy. Trade dealings with Saudi Arabia include huge arms sales – you’re talking of billions. Shocking. So we
barter principle for expediency. Political dissent is punished severely both in China and Saudi Arabia. So when are we
going to have the guts to call their bluff and force them to stop trampling on countless human beings? What about those
British values we hear so much about? For centuries they were inspired by Christ and his Gospel. That needs to happen
again.
PS The elderly priest asked his housekeeper:
Mary, do you think I should put some fire into my sermons?
No, you should put your sermons in the fire…
Please keep and reflect.
