PROGRAM FUNCTION:
The Public Works Department is responsible for providing municipal services which include, but is not
limited to, construction, maintenance and repair of bridges, streets/roads, storm drains/culverts, and
Public Works facilities. The Department is also responsible for fleet services, waste management and
utilities.
PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Recycling Operator conducts day to day tasks at the Clairmont Center for Recycling such as:
ensuring site safety and assisting customers in transfer/recycling station area and landfill; operating
machinery, operating scale, maintaining records of recycling operations, contacting contractors to
collect recycling products, supporting recycling and solid waste management educational programming,
as well as, providing support to landfill staff.
Job Duties and Tasks:

Maintain records for county recycling programs and work with contractors to collect recycled
product streams

Assist customers within the transfer/recycling station area. Includes recycling and recycling
awareness, identification and separation of hazardous wastes, and providing assistance guiding
transfer station user to appropriate disposal areas
Supports educational programing around recycling and solid waste management in the county
including;
Attending “Communities in Bloom” as the county recycling program representative
o organizes and provides educational recycling support for county schools
o organizes any promotional items that support recycling
o directly assists round up events
o works with local organizations within recycling/solid waste management events such as
earth day.
Maintenance of transfer station, scale, scale buildings, landfill grounds
Litter picking, mowing, tidying up in transfer station and shop, snow removal
Ensure all work related information is kept confidential as per policy and in accordance with
Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Comply with records management
practices as stated in the Records Management Policy
Participate within the County Safety Program(safety meetings, inspections, audits)
Scale operation:
o record weight of inbound and outbound vehicles and net weights
o data entry
o control traffic entering and exiting landfill (lights)
o identify wastes entering landfill and screen for prohibited wastes
o collect appropriate fees
Equipment operation (skid steer, loader, compacter, dozer)
Perform other tasks as needed or directed
Assist Environmental Assistant when needed

QUALIFICATIONS STATEMENT
Education and Experience
 Grade 12 or General Education Development Diploma required
 Business or Administration Certificate would be an asset
 Previous experience working in a landfill, transfer station or solid waste system would be an
asset
Skills and Abilities
 Ability to achieve Landfill Certification and/or Transfer Station Certification an asset
 Ability to work weekend work and overtime
 Excellent customer service skills - interact with waste haulers, members of the public and coworkers and willingness to take direction and work with others to accomplish required job tasks
 Ability to work with local organizations/stakeholders within recycling/solid waste management
events
 Ability to create educational schedules/programming
 Ability to operate heavy equipment
 Ability to undertake labor such as heaving lifting, sweeping, and shoveling
 Ability to use a computer
 Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
 Knowledge of proper techniques, safety precautions, and methods used in operation of heavy
equipment would be an asset
 Knowledge of health and safety requirements for solid waste facility
 Ability to ensure all work related information is kept confidential as per policy and in accordance
with Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
 Criminal record check is required
