The course will focus on the ideas of continuity and change throughout human history and prehistory. Over the course of the year, we will develop an understanding of world historical trends and developments from pre-history to the present day. As a class, we will help foster skills such as interpreting historical information, analyzing primary and secondary sources, using economics, maps and geography to develop important comprehension and analytical skills. World History is a course that focuses on the rise of ancient civilizations, geography, contemporary world problems, and world literature. Units to be covered include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. To help students become critical readers and effective writers. To help students understand the relationship between ancient and modern world civilizations and contemporary world problems. To incorporate lessons learned from the past and to help achieve individual student success in the modern world, while preparing students to meet the challenges of the future. To teach students word processing, email, Internet research, and PowerPoint skills. To teach students how to write historical research papers using MLA documentation. To teach students how to annotate, analyze, develop time management skills, study, and critically think about the world around us. 7. Supplies Needed Students have one week to acquire the school materials for this class. School materials are required for each class. World History Glencoe- be check out from bookstore One 3-ring binder 1 inch with college ruled writing paper, for our class only, turn in on day of quizzes/tests for a binder check College Ruled paper Plastic or paper Separators Daily Agenda or somewhere you will always write your homework and assignments in. Pen (blue or black ink only) and a pencil with an eraser (sharpened before class starts) and a highlighter/colored pencils for reading and activities (I will provide some highlighters/colored pencils, but if you want a full set bring when I tell you we will be using them) Daily Agenda: Students are responsible for reading and learning the schedule of the daily agenda from the board everyday there is class. The daily agenda is a tool to help students organize their classroom assignments and activities. The daily agenda is also used to communicate their schedule, class work requirements and homework for that day. Rules of the Classroom: 1. Come to class, on time, be prepared and try! 2. Have a positive attitude!! Be kind and caring! Use of appropriate behavior rand language at all times for school. 3. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (be respectful of others). 4. Food and drinks are not allowed in the building. Gum should not be seen or heard in the class. 5. Follow directions and procedures. 6. All other school rules apply – please follow all rules stated by CUHS,can be found in handout online as well. Electronic devices i.e. CD players ,Ipods, Cell phones, etc… must be put away and not used during class or itemswill be taken and turned into security via school policy. Violation of any rule WILL result in the following consequences: 1. Verbal reminder of the rules &/or individual meeting 2. Student will be given two verbal warnings in class then individual student-teacher meeting during or after class; then parent(s)/guardian will be contacted along with counselor. 3. 30 minutes of after school detention. It is the students’ responsibility to notify parents/guardians (call home). In detention, students write paragraphs reflecting on their poor choices and their respective negative consequences. A behavior plan will be worked out if necessary. Failure to attend detention, and/ or write reflective paragraphs will result in a Referral to the Office for further disciplinary action. If no parents/guardians signature on the detention/behavior form then parent contact and or counselor contact will be made then. 4. Conference with Administrator. 5. Administrative conference. This may include the teacher, student, parent, counselor, dean and/or intervention specialist. 6. Discipline Referral. Note: Consequence usually progressive but depending on the severity of not followed rule however more than one may be given. Immediate Removal from class and automatic referral to the office for ANY of the following offenses: fighting, assault, possession of any weapon or look-alike weapon, possession of illegal drugs/drug paraphernalia, endangerment (fire alarms, panic buttons,etc…). A Referral to the Office will occur if there is: damage to property, bullying, harassment or sexually inappropriate behavior, or cheating/plagiarism as per school policy. School Rules: Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned OFF, not used and or visible during class. 1stOffense: Teacher give verbal warning reminder, it will be taken for the rest of the class. 2nd Offense: It will be taken and given to administration Subsitute If you have a substitute please make sure that you follow instructions given. If they are not exactly the way we do in class, please just do as asked. You will always turn in whatever assignments you completed in class and finish whatever you did not complete for homework. You are to work on your assignments during class, you may not just do it all for homework. Please be courteous and follow the substitute’s direction, failure to do so will result in an assigned detention after school. Possible Rewards: Verbal praise, bonus points, preferred activity, reward, or positive call home. Positive consequences will occur if the rules are followed. Some positive consequences include passing scores, effective working relationships, non-stressful and safe environment, meaningful education, and self-growth as learners. These are just a few positive consequences that come from following class rules and procedures. Grades Student grades will be assessed in accordance with the following outline: Daily homework, DBQ’s (Document-Based Questions), in-class participation group work, in-class and outside research projects, Socratic seminar discussions, current event projects, Chapter Reading Quizzes, and Unit exams. Some of the larger projects we will work on in world history are: -Current Events -Map analysis -Posters -Timelines -Speeches -Movie Analysis -Presentations -Binder Check Grading Policy 90 – 100% = A 80 – 89% = B 70 – 79% = C 59 – 69% = D 59 – 50% = F Grading: Your semester grade is calculated from the three following categories: Assessments (40%) Tests, essays and other major projects (Anything with a letter grade) Homework (40%) All other written work: notes, quizzes, and short writing assignments Class Engagement: (20%) See separate handout: “Beyond Participation” What is an “A” student? Description of an A student as described by past students: Takes notes, asks questions, pays attention, does homework, studies for exams, is self-motivated. *Please remember that grades are EARNED, not GIVEN* Late Assignments: Submission of assignments past due dates is not acceptable. Students are expected to complete assignments in a timely manner. All work is due on the date specified (except for excused absences). Extenuating circumstances will be determined in a case by case basis. If you miss class, it is your responsibility to get caught up. How? Just follow these three easy steps: 1) Check the class website…………By the end of the day, I’ll update the webpage 2) Talk to a friend……………Copy down all notes and ask any questions you may still have 3) If you’re still confused……Let me know ASAP so I can help get you back on track, either via *A major assignment, such as an essay or other project which is given to you with 5 or more days of advance notice is due on the date assigned. If you are absent, someone must hand it in on that day or email it to me. Because you have an excused absence does not mean the assignment is not due. Late homework: *Note for Freshman*- New Program ASD: After School Detention What it is: This is an after school program with Mr. Constance from 2:25-3:30pm. Its is MANDATORY if you are assigned to it. There will be a late bus for you to take. How you are placed in it: If you forgot or do not turn in an assignment, you are automatically sent to ASD. You and your parent will be notified in person, via phone/email, and will serve your time either that day or the next day. You are to complete the assignment. It will be worth up to half credit if you turn it in the next day. Example: It is Monday. Sally does not turn in her homework for that day. Miss K tells Sally that she has ASD. She can either choose to serve it that day (Monday) or the next day (Tuesday). If you do not show up: Mr. Constance will handle you. A Word on Technology: Your printer may malfunction, your computer may crash, and your dog might even eat your homework. However, please note that technology is not a valid excuse for late work in this class. While I understand that such problems are often legitimate, it is still your responsibility to improvise if things go wrong and make sure that you complete your work on time. Plagiarism Warning: Plagiarism//Cheating: Plagiarism is the stealing/borrowing of another person’s words or ideas and “passing them on” as ones’ own. Plagiarism/cheating or copying is not allowed for any assignment including for homework, class work, tests, quizzes and projects. Cheating also includes using materials when not allowed, working with others to do assignments (unless specifically stated to the class as a whole) and copying any work from someone else with or without their knowing. If the teacher finds that a student(s) plagiarized/cheating he/she will receive a zero on the assignment and no make up given to replace it. A referral to Office for Administrative Discipline may occur Academic Honesty: Work should be a reflection of individual student ideas. Students should not look at another student’s work or share their work with others. Receiving or providing answers for an assignment, essay, quiz, or test is cheating and academic dishonesty—regardless of its form. Any such action will result in a phone call home and may result in a referral to the office for further review and possible additional disciplinary action. Attendance Attendance Policy: Per CHS rules: No more than four (4) absence are allowed excused or unexcused with a C or better may opt out of the final exam. One (1) sweep = One (1) absence. School sponsored events are not counted for an absence for this incentive. Tardy Policy: Sweeps rules applies. If caught in a sweep you must see Miss K by 2:30 that day. If a quiz/test- you must complete afterschool. Students who are not in their assigned seat when the bell rings will be considered tardy. When students enter the classroom tardy the need to sign in with their name, date, period and reason for being tardy with pass. Three (3) tardies (no sweeps) =30 minutes detention. DO NOT be a distraction or a disruption in the classroom. Your procedures will be exactly the same as if you entered the class room on time. If you have a note from another teacher, please give it to me quietly. Students then must get the bell work and get working in class. You must complete all missed work within the same time period as the rest of the class.
