Chaplain
Part -Time - 0.6 F.T.E. (42 Hours Bi-Weekly)

DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Director, Spiritual Care, the Chaplain, in collaboration with staff, physicians
and members of the Spiritual Care Services team, will provide Jewish and multifaith
religious, spiritual and emotional chaplaincy support to residents/patients, families,
healthcare professionals, Baycrest staff, volunteers and visitors. The Chaplain will provide
leadership and guidance in spiritual, religious and chaplaincy services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
 Performing pastoral functions associated with beliefs and practices of religious faith or
denomination in a respectful, meaningful manner that balances, but transcends the
Jewish identity of Baycrest with the needs of a diverse, multi-faith and heterogeneous
ethnic geriatric population.
 Providing spiritual direction, individual and group counseling to residents/patients,
families, staff and the broader community within Baycrest.
 Offering life-cycle support, including end-of-life counseling to residents/patients and
families.
 Responding to requests for assistance during emergencies or crises.
 Facilitating the involvement of appropriate community religious/spiritual resources at
the request of the resident/patient and/or families.
 Sharing information about religious issues by writing articles, giving speeches, or
teaching.
 Collaborating, as part of the interfaith Spiritual Care Services team, in planning,
developing, implementing and evaluating appropriate faith-based programs
throughout Baycrest.
 Overseeing and conducting Traditional (Orthodox) worship services in Wolinsky
synagogue (Sabbaths) or Wartsman Hall (Holy Days) and Apotex 2 Rec. Room on
Monday and Thursday afternoons for clients, patients, residents, family members and
staff, and work to expand the weekday services into a daily minyan.
 Participating in other religious ceremonies and services.
 Acting in a manner that is respectful, encouraging and supporting of the complex
nature religious beliefs and convictions of others.
 Supporting learning opportunities that foster professional growth, understanding and
integration of Spiritual Care Services into care at Baycrest.



Consulting with Director, Spiritual Care and provides inputs into, recommends and
supports the implementation of policies, practices, rituals, and programs that will
ensure excellence in the delivery of religious and pastoral services.
Complying with patient safety policies, practices and processes, performing job
responsibilities in a manner that supports Baycrest’s safety culture.
Performing cross-functional and other duties, as assigned and/or required
QUALIFICATIONS
 Completion of a Bachelor of Arts degree program.
 Master of Arts, Hebrew Letters, Divinity or other appropriate degree obtained from
a recognized program of religious studies.
 Rabbinic Ordination from recognized institution, academy, yeshiva or seminary.
 Clinical Pastoral Education (‘CPE’) or Pastoral Counseling Education (‘PCE’)
certification or equivalent.
 Membership in good standing in the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care
(‘CASC’).
 Recommended: Membership in good standing in Neshamah: the Association of
Jewish Chaplains (‘NAJC’).
 Registration in the Ontario College of Registered Psychotherapists (after October 1,
2014).
 Five (5) years related experience providing spiritual care & chaplaincy services.
 Previous experience in a non-profit organization, including a complex health care
facility (Hospital and/or Long-Term Care facility) or leading a religious congregation
is preferred.
 Proficiency in the Microsoft suite of software, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS
Project and PowerPoint.
 Knowledge of the Religious Freedom Act (Ontario).
 Effective stakeholder engagement, interpersonal skills and communication skills to
ensure effective communication at all levels of the organization including staff,
clients/residents and their families, visitors, external contacts and the community.
 Superior verbal, written, listening and presentation communication skills.
 Ability to communicate in an expressive, empathetic, situation appropriate manner.
 Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills.
 Exceptional counseling skills with special focus on grief counseling.
 Excellent analytical, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
 Knowledge of creative interpretation of biblical and rabbinic concepts, history,
practices, events, when leading services, study groups, counselling sessions, etc.
