4th SUNDAY OF PASCHA — The Paralytic. Apostles Carpus and Alphæus of the Seventy (1st c.). Greatmartyr George the New (1515). Martyrs Abercius and Helen, children of the Apostle Alphæus (1st c.). St. John Psichaita the Confessor, of Constantinople (9th c.). St. Augustine of Canterbury, Evangelizer of England (ca. 605). Acts 9:32 - 42 Tone 3 John 5:1-15 On this day the Church remembers the man who lay by the Sheep’s Pool in Jerusalem for 38 years, waiting for someone to put him into the pool. The belief was that the first person to enter the pool after an angel ‘troubled the water’ would be healed of his infirmities. The paralytic was always deprived of that opportunity because he could not move himself. Seeing the man, the Lord felt compassion for him and healed him. Through this account the Church reminds us that we too are healed through baptism and saved by Christ for eternal life. Thus, the Church tells us together with the paralytic to “sin no more that nothing worse befall you.” (John 5:14). Kontakion of the Paralytic — Tone 3 By Thy divine intercession, O Lord, as Thou raised up the paralytic of old, so raise up my soul, paralyzed by sins and thoughtless acts; so that being saved I may sing to Thee: “Glory to Thy power, O compassionate Christ!” Saint Augustine of Canterbury, also commemorated today, was a Benedictine monk and prior of a monastery, who led a mission from Rome to convert the people of Britain from Anglo-Saxon paganism to Christianity. He became the first Archbishop of Canterbury in the year 597. He is considered the "Apostle to the English" and a founder of the English Church. , Weekly Schedule Today, Sunday, May 26….……………………..9:30 am – 3rd Hour The Paralytic 9:45 am – General Confession 10:00 am -- Divine Liturgy Sunday, June 2………………………………….9:30 am – Third Hour The Samaritan Woman 9:45 am – St Xenia Prayers 10:00 am – Divine Liturgy Many Thanks! From it should come thoughts about eternity, and from prayer, even though it may be brief. Say to the Lord: “Gather my scattered mind, O Lord and humble my hardened heart with fear of Thee and have mercy on me!” For without Divine help we are powerless: we cannot even deal with pesky flies, much less invisible enemies!
