Job Title: Development & Special Events Associate
Fixed Term: One year
Responsible To: Head of Development
The National Theatre
The National Theatre of Great Britain (NT) is probably the busiest theater in the English-speaking
world. In its three theaters on the South Bank in London the NT presents an eclectic mix of new
plays and classics from the world repertoire. The National endeavors to maintain and reenergize the great traditions of the stage and to expand the horizons of audiences and artists
alike. Since its first performances in 1963 the National has staged well over 700 productions and
currently has seven or eight productions in repertory at any one time.
American Associates of the National Theatre
The American Associates of the National Theatre (AANT) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization,
based in New York, that promotes and supports the work of the National Theatre in both Great
Britain and the United States. Since 2005, the AANT has granted more than $10 million dollars
to the National Theatre, providing essential funding which supports the NT’s mission to develop
world-class productions with affordable ticket prices, while reaching out to artists and audiences
of the future through extensive education programs. Working closely with the Head of
Development and the Development Associate, the Development & Special Events Associate is
one of three staff members, who are supported by a Board of Trustees, Honorary Council and
US Corporate Advisory Board, as well as the National Theatre team in London. Further

Background
The AANT events program is tailored to National Theatre productions, activities and appeals in
the US, providing valuable opportunities to steward and cultivate donors, as well as raise funds.
The core events program currently includes:






NT Live private screenings in New York (up to six a year), San Francisco and Washington DC
(biannually) – pre-screening reception and talk from special guests
NT Live screenings at cinemas in New York, San Francisco and Washington DC – ticket
allocation and occasional informal drinks receptions
NT Live private screenings for corporate supporters in New York – a program being
developed
Annual London Theatre Trip – four day cultural tour for up to 40 AANT donors
Insider Events – held in the homes of donors or at private venues, tailored to specific NT
productions or appeals
Fundraising Gala events, when appropriate opportunities arise, such as the transfer of a
National Theatre production to Broadway
Purpose of Job
To be responsible for and coordinate all AANT events
To create interesting, relevant and high quality events and ensure their smooth running
With the Development team, AANT Chairman and Board, to be responsible for generating new
event ideas for current and prospective donors
To monitor and control costs and where possible raise funds from AANT events
To build relationships with current and prospective AANT donors to ensure continued support
and secure new gifts
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Attending, coordinating and managing a calendar of events throughout the year.
Tasks include: costing events; working to secure in-kind support and sponsorship to reduce
expenditure; organizing logistics - liaising with the NT team, venues, suppliers, artists, special
guests and event hosts; preparing Save the Dates, invitations and other printed materials;
managing events on Tessitura fundraising database; compiling event evaluation reports
2. Working closely with the AANT Board, Events Committee and event hosts to plan the events
program and to maximize fundraising potential where appropriate
3. Donor cultivation and membership support:
Engaging AANT donors and prospective donors through the program of events and
cultivating these relationships, working with the Head of Development and Development
Associate
Coordinating with the Development Associate to deliver effective follow up after events, to
ensure that current and prospective donors are cultivated for future gifts
Processing RSVPs and making ticket bookings for AANT donors in the absence of the
Development Associate
4. Coordinating with the Development Associate to update information relating to events on
the AANT website
5. Liaising with the Development Department of the National Theatre in London.
6. Carrying out any other duties as requested by the Head of Development and AANT
Chairman.
Required Skills and Experience
1. Educated to Bachelor’s degree level
2. At least one year of event organization experience
3. Project management experience
4. Experience of working in a fundraising environment desirable, but not essential
5. Proven organizational skills, with the ability to plan ahead and prioritize workload
6. Good presentation and influencing skills
7. Ability to communicate with a wide range of people at all levels
8. Computer literate – good use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
9. Working knowledge of fundraising databases
10. Accuracy and attention to detail
11. A can-do attitude
12. Interest in the performing arts
Terms & Conditions

Salary of $35,000 per year

Fixed term: 1 year

Probation period: 3 months

Hours: 35 hours per week from 9:30am to 5:30pm, although flexible working hours will be
considered for candidates with significant events experience, provided they can work from
the AANT office Monday-Friday. Additional hours may be necessary in order to fulfill the
requirements of the post.

Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends


15 days annual leave
Health and dental insurance provided following successful completion of 3 month probation
period
